Why is D4 boring

It’s not a rant… ok maybe it’s a rant somewhat. It’s also an honest question and brainstorm!

In D3, even an average gamer such as I, which take a couple of days to reach 70, and hardly goes beyond GR120 even after one week almost fulltime… The grind is not that demotivating!

So I grind D3, but I enjoy it. But when I grind D4 (went up to level 92 Sorcerer pre-season and gave up at Necromancer 54 this season), the grind is… simply unappealing. I just gave up.

But why I wondered?

Might be first impression. Pre-season changing build was just too tedious. After the 5th time I changed build I lost motivation to grind required gold… and I was left with a half-finished build at level 92… With which I could hardly do anything, including finding more gold or missing aspects. Or simply survive (Sorcerer Power! ahem…)

Or maybe it’s just the too small stash? and too wide affix distribution of items? (i.e. can’t be bothered to do tedious AND required inventory and item management).

The paragon board is fun. But it’s just too much gold to play with, screw that…

Yeah I know I could use a D4 planner… but you know it’s supposed to be a game not a job, if you get my drift?

Anyway, it’s probably all of that combined.

To top it all my favorite class is the sorcerer. But the sorcerer get completely shafted so far. But I think I could have swallowed that pill.

It’s mostly the required and tedious item/stash management and gold cost of respeccing that is really putting a stop in my motivation to try things… because trying things is just too hard, I think.
And as for just following a build guide… well, there is no point nor fun in that, as far as I am concerned…

Anyway, that’s me. What is the thing that kept you going or stopped you guys?

EDIT It all came to me in a flash. Yes this is just that. The essence of a good ARPG is grind, find loot, try new build that use new gear, experience more fun, power and build diversity. Repeat!
But in D4 the whole “find loot and experience more fun, power and build diversity” is really chose a build and stick to it or… good luck hey?
Also, you’ll have to spend hours comparing 1000s of yellow text lines…
Well I guess this is good bye.

Diablo 4 is a “better” mobile game. Mediocre systems. I mean even Diablo Immortal has Looking For Group function imagine that.

I agree with you OP. I too played D3 and was not bored grinding, but I can’t put my finger on why D4 is so boring. I think the reasons you gave are pretty legit. Also, D3 had better builds than D4, as of now.

Most of it comes from mob density. There are so few packs present and so much running in between… Running feels like soo slow.

My answer to the OP is easy…

The endgame in D4 is NM dungeons. 95% of any non-casual player’s time will be spent in NM dungeons.

NM dungeons are a terrible experience because of the endless backtrack through empty rooms doing nothing. It was measured on average, you’ll spend 50% to 60% of your time in NM dungeons back-tracking via empty rooms.

60% of the endgame that I spend 95% of my time in = doing nothing is why D4 is boring.

For reference play Last Epoch endgame. Or one of them - the Monoliths. Those maps are RNG procedural generated and yet are fun with constant fights and no back-tracking. The difference is night and day and why I was happy to play 2000 hours of LE with ease while I struggle to keep playing this to level 100.

That is definitely poor game design. Maybe they were meant to be done in groups that split up? I dunno.

The layouts of all the main towns are also bad. Why isn’t my stash next to the portal? That is nuts.

If they ware designed for grups i thing we are missing Grupfinder xD

That is an excellent point. I can’t come up with any reason why they did not make it easier for people to find groups. That made zero sense. I have not watched any of these chats. Has that been addressed at all?

That would simply divide the back-tracking by the number of sub-groups. It’s still an issue. Plus I believe most players play solo.

Guys… ive said once and ill keep saying it… its the loot !!

The loot/itemisation is so bad and dull it doesnt give you anything to chase.

In D3 i was always chasing set pieces and specific items to create a really OP build to push harder and blast my way through high GR and it was fun.

If D3 had the loot that was in D4, exact same, i can assure you, youd feel the same about D3.

ARPGs require you to chase something. If the loot is garbage… well what are you chasing ?? Whats the point??

The crappy end game systems, deffinetly dont help. But if the loot was really well done, Id still be playing.

D3 vanila had almost the same loot as d4. PPl ware still selling crap on Ah for 100 of dolars ;>

I don’t think the loot is garbage. People are completing the toughest content in the game, aren’t they? So if they can do it, then the loot is fine.

Maybe we just don’t understand the dynamics of all the different affixes yet? Maybe they spent too much time and money trying to develop way too many ways to “build” your character instead of other things that wind up being really annoying?

He said its dull, not that the loot itself is bad. Which it is. But another point.

Sorry you misunderstood. I dont mean you cant find loot good enough to do end game content. I mean its just boring and uninspired. The loot system is dull.

As many people have pointed out, you can end up with pretty decent gear by level 60 and may not find many upgrades between 60 and 100. Thats a really poor design.

But most uniques while being rare, just arnt that great.

All Barb class Uniques are Trash… like no one even bothered putting some good ideas in them.

Everything just feels too samey. Same combat, same loot, same dungeons, same helltide zones.

But you can’t even enter any kind of flow state because you have to empty an inventory full of gear ever 15 minutes.

I think it’s the fact that there’s nothing to do when you reach level 100, nothing that requires level 100 anyway, so there’s no motivation to keep grinding.
That, plus the fairly low drop rate on uniques and no way to target-farm the ones you need, makes it feel like none of the activities are worthwhile.
The fact that more than 50% of the time in nightmare dungeons is spent walking around wouldn’t be a problem if there was sufficient motivation to complete them.

While buffing density will make the activities a bit more fun, it won’t make them any less pointless and that’s the main problem.

Its why i havent bothered attempting to reach 100. Highest i could get was level 75.

Whats the point of getting to 100? Kill uber lillith once, get no decent rewards. Game over.

It is not boring for me at least.
