I hope this topic is not too old. I also heard a little bit about the bad AH experience in D3, just a little. I was never a D3 player. I have seen people saying that having an AH in the game will lead to a pay to win nightmare, but I do not quite understand. Some are also saying that having an AH will cause a lot of items to lose their value. I do not understand this either. Aren’t people already trading outside the game on website like Discord? We are talking about some super popular website or third party platforms that can reach a lot of players. You can pull a list of all kinds of items that are listed on a third party website just like how an in-game AH would work. However, it is not convenient when the seller or buyer is offline, or when the info is not updated in time sometimes…
In my opinion, we just need an AH in game to allow people to trade mats and rare items just like what people are already doing outside the game. Legendary and unique items should stay account bound. Certain rules can be set to stop some of the common scam technics in the AH. I am just not sure why this is a bad idea, and why it is Ok if it happens outside the game, but not inside the game.
If you know a good reason, please shed some light. I mean light, please, not some bitter replies or something just to show that someone knows better than the rest of us.

before asking for an AH
lets ask for a free trade game mode
and a ssf one

Give us group finder, public trading, a central trading HUB of 50+ rendered players and server wide chat, etc etc.
My experience with Diablo 3 RM auction house was that they are 100% expensive. Everything was $14.99 and BiS gear was at least $87.
Heck someone posted thousands of dollars.

I want an AH that allows in-game trading with in-game currency, not real money. I do not think it is ever a good idea to link in-game items to real world currencies, which will lead to pay to win. I guess people can buy gold now on some websites. No system is perfect, but trading D4 items using real world currency will be a deal breaker for me. Using the gold in game, however, would make things easier and convenient than it is now.
I do not particularly enjoy bargaining with others when trying to buy or sell something. I rather see a list price. Transparency and self-service are important to me. I think AH can do this better. Every time I see the single-word reply “Offer” after I asked how much, I stop the conversation right there no matter how bad I want the item. I am pretty sure that I am not alone.

Well if you open up trading you get the same problem you had in D2 which is people paying real money for items. If you open up the auction house it also creates the same problem. They tried a real money auction house in D3, and they didn’t want the game to go down that route because people weren’t necessarily playing to be better at the game, they were just playing to make money. Granted there wasn’t much of an endgame until years later in that game, but still.
Now you can use the currency in the game (gold) for the auction house, but once you’ve established a base line for the currency you just open up gold selling even more, and if the AH can sell more then just rares you also open up the idea of paying for items through real money via illegal means. There’s no real solution for this sadly. You either keep the status quo of trading and have players complain, or you open it up and have players complain, basically it comes down to how much botting and RMT do you want in your game?

Most people who sit here and play trade simulator will throw a hissy fit if an AH is put up because they can’t price fix items like they can on a website where they can post things up for a low price and hope that people will sell theirs at that low price so they buy it and flip it to make a profit. An AH would ruin that for them because if they post something up for a low price they can’t stop people from buying it which is why we NEED on in this game. There’s no reason to have to alt tab to a website to search for something just put it in game and be done with it. Oh yeah and give us back the OVERLAY MAP!

It will ruin the game, like it did d3. Just put yourself in the shoes of a normal player.
Say you’re thinking about gear at any point, even if it is only part of build crafting, not even proper gear.
Now think about what you would do… something reasonable… err, say 3-5 nightmare dungeons depending on how much coffee you had. Maybe the same amount of whispers. Look at the current game, what are the chances you’ll get a gear upgrade even on your way to full sacred or full ancestral… maybe 3-6% chance?
Now go to the auction house. its 100%, just farm some gold. imagining maybe 2 whispers if you don’t care about perfect stat rolls just the selection.
There’s no point in playing diablo with an ah, you just buy everything, and it takes the actual experience to feel it, but it makes the whole concept of arpg loot look really, really foolish. The entire game becomes pointless. The moment the ah feels like the most effective way to play the game, you delete it.

until you fix the itemization which is absolute trash right now, AH would be the best way to finally get some upgrades, it gives you a end goal to work towards to instead of mindlessly and hopelessly grinding for god knows how long just to HOPE you might find a good piece of gear.
I vote for AH but with only in game currency…it worked for wow, it can work for diablo.

Those of us who played D3 with an AH saw how bad it was.
Absolutely NO to that in this game.
However, we should have party trading like D3 had. If something dropped in your party you can trade it with someone in that party within 2hrs of it dropping.
Would make doing ubers fun with friends when your 5th item drops you cannot share and they have bad luck and get nothing…

While I agree with you, that’s not how the world works most of the time. It sucks, but it’s the reality we live in.
Because no fun allowed. Seriously though, it’s because these developers don’t have enough talent for innovation. Trading should 100% be in a ARPG. It’s a core fantasy for the genre. However, since D3 happened, we know it takes a bit more effort to do it correctly.
First, there needs to be 2 different modes. One with trading disabled called Standard League, and another one with open Trading and an Auction House called Trading League. These 2 modes need to have completely separate economies, drop rates, and leaderboards. Each player picks their preferred League when they create their character.
That’s how you do SSF and Trading the correct way. You either go all in or nothing at all.

D3 real money auction house got Bliz in trouble with the Security Exchange Comission because the host had the ability to create shortages and artificially inflate the value of products.

Auction House was never mentioned in D4’s development so it wasn’t a question in the first place.
Blizzard has had an auction house in their biggest cash cow game for the past 20+ years.
They can do it in Diablo 4, they can manage the issues of RMT it may bring, they can handle the logistics of programming it. They’re not as incompetent as some people like to say.
But none of that matters cause they simply don’t wanna do it. same with offline mode. Unless they can skim a profit off each sale made in the AH, their shareholders have no incentive to want to hear about it during a quarterly earnings report.
