Why do you play hardcore?

Because HC is the real endgame.

The fun is all in the journey, not the loot. And loot doesn’t actually “feel” valuable unless you know you can lose it permanently.

To me HC is all about building your stash… because your characters will eventually die.

The thrill, heart-pounding/butt-clenching moments, consequences, importance of good decisions, importance of good skill, needing to squeeze the most out of your character and thus appreciating every drop and upgrade, needing to balance offense with defense in terms of abilities and all stats in general, and other reasons I’m forgetting.

I wouldn’t play hardcore in most games (like WoW lol… can’t believe there is now hardcore in that) but it seems to just work so well in arpgs. Softcore feels like half the game is missing and is utterly boring in comparison.

Hardcore is more fun. It forces you to pay attention and min-max your gear regularly. You also play slower and more carefully. There is a real sense of accomplishment and adventure from pushing hardcore that one doesn’t get from the Eternal realm, which fairly quickly becomes a chase for uber gear.

I like to practice leveling up. Getting a ton of practice because I’m so bad at this game.

I don’t, but I always see how far/long I can go without dying. I don’t play like “eh, who cares if I die, I can just go again.”

I think people select it for bragging rights. Anyone can challenge themselves in many ways without selecting “hardcore”… But selecting it tells everyone else who cares that you are HARDCORE. Most game makers know this, and build their game to announce your hardcore-ness to everyone in the game, too. It goes back to the early days of having the high score on the arcade machine and typing “A$$” into it as your name.

Having visited the rest of the class forums, I guess another reason I play HC is that the community is less whingey :stuck_out_tongue:

I dunno about that - there’s a new post about these jamokes dying to lilith’s floor drop at least once every couple days…

I’m disregarding the ‘boohoo I’m quitting hc’ posts

“Hardcore, where every moment is endgame”

This is the way.

I thought I am the only one playing this game this way. Now I know I am not alone.

Because I’m stupid, and I like any bug report sent to Blizzard to be paid with 100 hours of my time.

Everything feels relevant. Small choices matters. Getting into an uknown area adds a concern that turns into excitement. Game was meant to be played this way!

I rarely roll a hardcore character, but I do occosionally do it, as it makes you better at the game, as you have to pay really close attention to what is going on, to not die. And the adreneline rush.

Two main reasons for me:

  1. The highs and the lows - adrenaline rush for nearly dying, feeling good making outplays and living in some situations. Dying when you make a mistake is part of the process and you can learn something from it most of the time even if it sucks until you get stuck into a new char
  2. HC forces you to play a well-rounded build - Both offense and defense are important whereas in softcore you are generally more incentivized to go extreme on the offense side and just accept a few deaths compared to building a well-rounded character

I play HC because it makes it meaningful and the sense of thrill and fear is absolutely real.

It’s like living in Caracas, Venezuela all over again without living there xD

I play hardcore because deaths of any form extend the content and give you more game time. If I was softcore I would be done with the game/leagues way faster.

I play it for those moments where you are down to your last 1 HP, your adrenaline is going, and you are spamming health potions hoping your nuke CD ends.

I like panic mode, and coming out on top.

Playing HC has turned me into a really good gamer. I’ve always enjoyed playing competitively and on the hardest difficulty. I am thankful for this mode otherwise I wouldn’t even buy/play this game as I could not enjoy the SC version unless they made some bigger punishment for dying like deleveling and losing loot.
