I get having sub talents, that add more functionality. Like granding a basic skill a chance to immobilize, or cause vulnerability.
But as far as the core Basic skill goes, ranks seem pointless. Ranking up the skill grants 1% damage per talent point.
ONE PERCENT
There is no way 1, let alone 4 additional points would ever be worth spending to rank up these abilities for just an increase in 1% damage per point.
Come on Blizz… Do better.

That percent keeps getting lower and lower every time someone brings it up. I wonder…

It’s .33% increase now since you posted this.

So that Blizzard can pretend that this game isn’t full of shallow systems.

I’m not sure it would be much better, for most builds, if each rank gave more damage than they do now, unless it were massively buffed. Most builds probably don’t currently have the extra skill points to heavily invest in basic skills, even if the damage per rank were increased by 100%. Maybe if the +ranks-to-basic-skills stat were fairly ubiquitous on gear and didn’t compete for space on gear with currently existing stats, basic skills might feel better with higher ranks in more builds.

I made a topic about this after the first beta test.
“Skill Generators. Yes, No, Sometimes?”
The gist is the way they’re designed in modern ARPGs player’s naturally look for a way to not use them. They lack strong enough synergy to be worth while. Not just skill points but for gearing.
Most builds will inevitably be wasting two skill points because the skill tree is kinda scuffed in design. When you limit players to only 6 skill slots that makes the points seem like the least of problems.
In a perfect situation one could find a reason to use and not use them.
But they’re simply too weak and lack generalize synergy. Always have been in most ARPGs.
Blizzard forums never cease to amaze me.
Basics have ranks so you can make them stronger.
My friend uses a build on his sorcerer that does insane damage with arc lash as his main damage source. It’s amazing.
My barbarian uses bash to do a fairly considerable amount of damage while building fortify and stunning and to keep DPS up if I mess up my deathblow/chains/kick cool down rotations.
blowing anything up instantly every 20 seconds is fun, for 1 out of every 20 seconds.
source: my main atm is an arc lash sorc.
- Change Basic Skills from 5 Ranks to 3
- Increase Damage significantly for Basic Skills
- Basic Skill Ranks should increase Resource Generation by a good amount
- Basic Skills should hit multiple targets. Some should be a Cleave type, some should be a small PBAoE. This would greatly increase the utility as Lucky Hit has multiple proc chances and Resource generation would scale better.
- Players should be given the option of starting their Skill Point allocation at Basic, Core, or Defensive. This allows players to not have to waste Skill Points in Basic Skills if they do not want to use them.
Alternatively, players who want to use Basic builders and not Core dumps (or the Passives which may not have any benefit) the ability to start their point allocation in Basic, skip Core, and go directly to Defensive.
If players do not want either Basic or Core skills, they can start in Defensive and continue their skill tree investment without ever wasting points in Basic and Core. For Barbarian, this would be fantastic to run Shouts, Kick, Ultimate, and Deathblow for example. There are quite a few interesting builds that could work, especially if you freed up all the points you have to spend for Basic and Core skills!
It is very limiting how Blizzard designed the Skill Tree. You are either forced into a certain playstyle and skill choices, or you waste a lot of points. It is already a little anemic in that you can hardly afford putting 5 points into a single skill, let alone 5 points into 2 skills with all of the Passives that are let’s say - required.
I told you a million billion times, don’t exagerate!
Seriously though, that bonus gets higher the more levels you have. It’s certainly more than 1%.
as far as I can tell every single skill I’ve checked extra skill points are a 10% boost.
no variation, no scaling up as you add more, just always 10% every point
most every basic skill is so weak it doesn’t really matter though, a lot of them have good utility though
It is really up to you to decide if it is worth it to you.
Because if you know what you are doing with gear stats and aspects, the damage goes crazy high. I got 8/5 and others 7/5. Everything blows up or melts. Playing as rogue. Seen druids kill everything on screen before I can even setup my combo. Hard to tell about other classes during legion with everything flying around.
There’s also no passives in the basic tree so they never intended for you to play without one.
