Why did this game cost money?

I saw an idea earlier that the base game should be free and the more I think about it, the more the poster is correct, this game should be free. Hear me out, league of legends and POE are completely f2p and imo they are way more developed and provide more content than d4 currently has, tell me why you think it should cost this much money?

Your free to play games are designed to force you to use the cash shop.

they’re going to add it to game pass eventually, you just bought it early ;p

I think they should go f2p then charge $25 per new stash tab. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

In some instances, F2P games can generate more revenue than paid for games due to micro transactions

You have to decide a path you want to take with your game and Blizzard went with the paid for path.

If this game were like league you’d be able to play the Barb to start and have to pay $15 to play the rogue (or play 900 hours to unlock it) so what’s the difference? I’d rather just pay up front honestly.

A better comparison instead of league is DotA. It’s a more polished game graphically and when it comes to the UI. All the heroes are unlocked from day one. The only thing you’ll ever pay for are cosmetics… but it’s hard for a game developer to make a game so profitable without having a bunch of stupid pay walls like league has.

And that’s why I’d rather pay up front. I don’t want my content locked behind a pay wall and companies aren’t going to be proficient enough when it comes to developing games to not set them up in this manner to be profitable

While that is true that you have to play to unlock champions in league, it at least made me feel like playing the game and putting in the hours was worth my time, because I can eventually unlock them for free, I was working towards something, I do not get that same feeling with d4

sounds like your used to f2p games

boxed games are usually “finished” once sold, nothing else to unlock.

this unlocking dopamine addiction is a staple mindset of F2P gaming, and i too suffer from it… games without things to unlock now feel… stale in comparison

You can play diablo immortal. Let us know your experience after you remortgage your house for the predatory RNG gem rolls.

The real question is:

Why does it cost a lot of money, plus a cash shop, and a battle pass?

league of legends would like a word with you

Yes I think I am “spoiled” from f2p games, working towards something new for hundreds of hours and not paying a dime? That’s just free entertainment

That is what i’ve been saying forever.
How can anybody even white knight this game if even all of those 3 things exist. It is obviously developer scum

Idk I play MOBAs for serious competition. I don’t play when I’m tired. I don’t play with people who had a sip of alcohol that day, etc. in a competitive game you should have access to what every other player has access to. This creates a level playing field

It’s absurd to play a competitive esports title when half of your hero pool is locked behind a pay or play for decades wall. That’s like putting the battle rifle in halo behind a pay or play for decades wall just because it’s F2P. Imagine if they did that?

That’s why a lot of F2P titles suck. They do it wrong. Make your money off of cosmetics and battlepasses like DotA or fortnite. Don’t screw over the playerbase with your greed in a competitive genre

its not “free”, you’re a mortal… youre “wasting time” and dying faster, not accomplishing anything whatsoever with your life… while those with jobs will pay the extra cash and unlock things immediately

the cost = your life

How is $70-100 alot of money if you dump 100 hours into something before you no longer find it fun.

Games were expensive in the 80s at 80-100 each which had about 5-10 hours of gameplay

Because if it wasn’t, they barely would have gotten 1 red cent, considering the state of the game.

Wait until steam release 2024, high chance payment model will change.

Now, 12.08.2023 Overwatch 2 goes live in steam, and they will monitor the success of there IP on that platform.

Some people dumped 100 hours in it, hoping that it would eventually get fun once the “end-game” is reached, but it never did. It’s not that they actually enjoyed their time the entire way through.

Sir, if I am enjoying it and it’s free, that’s a win-win, I could be out at the bars or something else that costs money, but I prefer the free, easier path. Especially in todays world, free entertainment is hard to come by

Never played LoL. So I can’t say. You kids must like your silly customes, then.
