Why can't I turn on Ray Tracing with my supported GPU?

Currently, I have a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. It has 16 gigs attached to it for memory (8 dedicated) and I have the latest drivers installed. Nvidia says my latest update is supposed to support Ray Tracing for D4 but every time I go into my game settings, the options are greyed out. It the settings, it just says ‘Off’ and I am completely unable to change anything to turn it on.

I have adjusted a few of my settings but all I have done is turn the settings up a little higher for ‘optimization’ but nothing helps to turn the feature on. I only had some options set lower to improve performance and prevent any extra problems.

So what’s the deal? Why can’t I use the Ray Tracing features? I can’t see any reason why it won’t work. Graphics card is supported. Latest updates for both drivers and game. Graphics settings seem to be fine. What’s the deal? Is this happening to anyone else?

well im not a tech expert - so that being said - optimization prios performance, which raytracing probably doesnt fit into?

I don’t know what you mean by this.

i can do you some screenshots, in 10-15 mins =)

Actually, I think I just figured it out.

Apparently, for whatever reason, I had to turn it on through the ‘Quality Preset’ dropdown menu. If anyone sees this has has trouble figuring out how to turn it on, you have to select the dropdown menu and select the Ray Tracing level you want.

I turned mine all the way up to high and then lowered the different settings I wanted in my graphics options like before to improve performance. Such as turning off distortion and turning down the ‘Ambient Occlusion’ options.

ah nice! glad you got it to work!

hows your fps doing? personally i have a feeling its not really optimized yet. my PC isnt bad, but i did notice some fps drops with raytracing.

Currently my FPS is sitting at about 103 but I just recording a minute long video of what it looks like on my screen.

There are some issues.

There’s a lot of black flashing in the foliage and such. I have adjusted the visual settings some to turn things down a notch to two but I think you are right that there are bugs that need to be ironed out. My FPS is showing live on the bottom of the screen as it adjusts in real time.

I am uploading it to my youtube page here: https://youtu.be/6s8UmpjLIus

your video is set to private ^^

It’s been changed from that. It’s still uploading so it might be a minute

works now! seems to run rather fluid actually. i had to tune a lot of stuff down, even tho way more demanding rtx games work fine. But i must also admit that my pc is a little mess and really could use a fresh install

It’s fluid, but the issue is just the black flashing among the details like the grass, the cracks in the rocks, and the vines. Not sure what settings I can change or tune down from here but it may need at least that to avoid that flashing shadows or whatever is going on.

It’s not great.
I usually run at 3840x2160 @ 120 fps, only capped by vsync, the game will run at 150+ fps if I let it.

With all of the RT stuff turned on and maxed out i’m not seeing anything over about 85 and with lows of 25. Obviously there’s a middle ground that’ll be performant, but i’m running a 4090 24G with 64G DDR5, R9 7900X 12-core running at 4.7Ghz all running on 990 Pro SSDs. So it needs a beast to run smoothly.

I’m not really noticing any difference in graphics quality at the moment either, i’m sure it does look better if you compare screenshot to screenshot, but just playing I can’t really tell.

Here’s a 1.5 minute video where the settings are turned down a good bit more and the black shadow flickering seems to be corrected.

Overall, it looks a little better but I don’t think it’s a ‘huge’ improvement over not having Ray Tracing. I’ll 100% agree that the side by side screenshot comparison seems to overinflate the differences.

Just fyi. I have picked up a very consistent client crash since I turned on RT. Not only is it not optimized well, it is buggy.

I do play in 4k on a 3090ti. But was issue free since 2 weeks after launch till I turned this on. I do notice a difference especially in skill effects and reflections and shadows look more realistic.

It is not harming my pc in any way. I just get the client popup window saying “help us help you” nonsense. So I guess I should be at least happy it is no longer hostile software. :hamster:  That’s progress right?

Here is some review on RT

Usually (always), Laptops do not have normal versions of their components.
That is, you don’t have an RTX 4070, but a Laptop RTX 4070

This has 2 effects: They have a different internal name, and are much less powerful than the “real” (something like 50% or 33% less powerful).

It is probably (due to the different name) that they forgot to include it in the compatibility list, or it is possible that it is not powerful enough to be compatible.

I believe in this particular case that the 4070 laptop is actually a 3070 GPU, and only has 8G dedicated VRAM, and is about 20%+ less powerful than a desktop 3070. But it’s still compatible. You can turn RT on using a 20 series, it’s just slow.

To be honest, it seems extremely unlikely to me that a laptop graphics card would be more powerful than a previous generation desktop.

What I do see likely is that the new generation will be better in RT, but not better general performance.

Edit: In fact, after a quick search, the specifications of the Laptop 4070 are worse in every way than the desktop 3070. Except the VRAM which have the SAME amount and is slightly faster… I think you confused the Desktop 4070 with the Laptop 4070.

I fully agree that RTX 4070 Laptop GPU is not equivalent to a desktop RTX 4070 GPU. To me that’s completely fair to say that it’s probably more equivalent to a much lesser model.

That said, it does seem to be a slight improvement (but not huge). The graphics do seem more bold, colorful and more fluid. There is more definition and the images are sharper and cleaner. There is a significant improvement to detail and it is easier to see the definition of certain things like my armor, the attacks, my horse and it’s armor. Overall, I will say that it’s definitely a little bit of improvement that will make me enjoy the game more, however, I don’t think it’s living up to the hype. Make sure you DO NOT enable the DLSS Frame Generation. That has been the bane of my existence making my game crash over and over at random. Also, a big improvement is using the sharpen image and mas framerate sliders to their max values. All in all, Ray Tracing seems like not that huge a deal.

One of these days, I will have significantly more money and can build a better desktop with a higher end GPU and 4k monitor but until that day, this laptop will suffice.

EDIT: Adjusting the in game brightness setting and the monitor brightness to compensate makes a big difference as well. Apparently, I had my in game brightness turned up too high somehow and my monitor down lower. This made it significantly more crisp and overall better. Here’s a new video of how tweaking the brightness makes a bit of a difference… https://youtu.be/NaqhopAZsnw

Try this perhaps and see if it resolves the issue:
