Why do people compare Diablo 4 to Baldur’s Gate 3? The only similarities they have are the birds eye view and click-to-move controls… Were you not going to play BG3 if Diablo 4 was good? They aren’t really direct competitors.
Because the older BG is a little similar to an ARPG (less intrusive turn base) and people still think its that way but it isnt in BG3 which heavily focuses on strategy during the turn base system now.
Because they think BG3 is an aarpg
BG is a turn-based game not an Action RPG. It’s like you move then you let the opponent move in turns. You move like a Chess. Each player make turns.
Edit. I remember… not really straight waiting for turns. On fights, you start with your moves per each character your have on a party then you press action. And the fight resumes with opponent AI making its move. And you decide when to pause to command a move for each character and then press resume to continue the Action. You keep on pressing pause to command new actions for each character and resume action until the fight is complete. I never had a fight where I didnt pause. I pause to react to the moves of the opponent AI.
It’s the hot new game and a lot of people don’t actually understand what kind of game it is, but it looks like Diablo.
So you get a lot of these “I quit” people gravitating towards the game because they think it’s a direct competitor to D4 and will greatly effect sales or show Blizzard something.
There are going to be a lot of very upset people after today.
Because it’s a much better isometric RPG releasing shortly after. Yes the genre is still way different, but this is like saying you can’t pit Starfield against BG3 for GOTY or RPGGOTY. Sure you can, and people will.
People compare Apples to Penguins all the time; good old internet, never change. heh.
I watched the most boring gameplay video of BG3 earlier. It sucks almost as much as POE.
Because a company that says they want to give you a good game without a battlepass or cash shop. That has tons of content, tons of story. And they listen to feedback of players, and understand what a good RPG is.
Now lets look at Blizzard, A company who designs a ARPG without the dopamine hits of a good loot system.
Enough said.
- They are both rpgs
- Both in a fantasy setting
- Both Isometric views
- They both have gearing and equipment
Most gamers don’t just play one genre of games. We will play anything that is a good. BG3 is going to be a good game, therefore people will play it. With how AAA is going lately, good games are rare so people are excited about it.
I played Baldur’s Gate 3 years ago, and genuinely got confused that it’s ACTUALLY releasing now. I didn’t even realize it wasn’t out years ago. It was pretty boring though, although I’m not really into the Divinity Sins, D&D type of decision making storytelling games.
Legends say if you activate the powers of a unique wand you will be teleported into the true Diablo 4 game. Most of the people end up in BG3.
Yeah it’s crazy because Runescape shares all of those traits too. People don’t seem to make the same comparison there, luckily.
The comparison really boils down to Blizzard and their history, Larian and theirs, and the obviously massive canyon between the quality of their most recent releases.
Everyone knows they’re different genres. People are just pointing out what a studio can accomplish when they truly care and arent fully domineered by corporate overlords that wouldnt know a good game if it bit them on their rear.
If you are the kind of person who doesn’t have an attention span or patience yeah, you probably won’t enjoy a more tactical style combat system.
BG3 is a massive, high quality game with AAA quality while self publishing. It’s pretty rare for that to occur in the gaming industry so it’s getting a lot of praise for accomplishing that. It’s nothing like runescape in terms of quality.
Maybe some want exactly not an ARPG after this “journey” and just want to play a good RPG (possible to play offline) and working item hunt and stuff.
U dun have to compare really. U have 24hrs a day, what’s fun for u, play that game… And it takes time away from D4.
You can’t even have inter species relations in Diablo. D4 Bad /s
Quality of games.
Old blizzard “when it’s done”, with the level of quality, best game possible of the genre which is fun, and if its no fun, than they canceled even on 95% progress of development.
And larian actually take this “old blizzard” as standard, best quality possible and development as long it’s needed, for the genre they produced the game.
And it doesn’t help, that larian games use cinematic videos, in quality of blizzard games.

I’ve played plenty of turn-based games in my life. They are one of the oldest combat systems in gaming history. The Persona series did a good job at spicing up this formula. However, unless BG3 is spicing up the combat, it’s draw will probably be the cinematics and storytelling rather than some turn-based combat.
Runescape is fantastic and beaming with quality. OSRS has literally grown year over year since 2013 with over 150k concurrent players at a time during peaks. Pretty strong feat for a 20 year old game.
