Who is Diablo's Counterpart in the Diablo Universe?

In the Diablo franchise, Diablo is the main villain. He also has some brothers, and even a niece–Lilith.

There are also angels who fight the demons which obey Diablo and his brothers and niece.

However, they don’t actually seem to have a leader, nor do they behave in a manner that is counter to demons–they also indulge in evil.

So, who and where is Diablo’s counterpart?

Is it Akarat? I’m not quite sure who that guy is, but I know that the Crusader/Paladins seem to worship him.

i thought it was me… cough, us.

Best I can say is that like the 7 evils of Tathamet which include Diablo at it’s head, there is the Angiris Council in the High Heavens. The 5 archangels in the Angiris Council represent the virtues of Anu. Since Diablo is the leader of the evils his counterpart would be Malthael who was the leader and now Imperius who took his place.

Imperius is the archangel of valor, Malthael was the archangel of wisdom, Itherael is the archangel of fate, Auriel is the archangel of hope, and Tyrael was the archangel of justice and is now wisdom.

Currently Imperius is his counterpart.

Okay, but aren’t even the angels capable of evil?

That doesn’t seem to be a counter to the demons at all…

I have to admit, D3 had an extremely boring story, so I completely forget most of what happened with the angels besides a bunch of them being evil.

Which ones besides Izual ?

I think you forgot everything that happened. I can only assume you mean the angels that served Malthael.

I don’t know that the angels are evil so much as indifferent to the plight of mankind. Imperius is an absolute tool and Malthael is definitely pretty evil though.

I just watched a lore video on the history of this IP before and during the games so far. It is actually pretty cool. I’m horrible at learning lore while actually playing games though.

Angels don’t seem to be very nice to anyone. So poor Inarius has a hush hush sleepover with a demon so they turn him over to be tortured for the rest of eternity.

I am not sure why Inarius wants to return to the high heavens Imperius will have something to say about that. The Angiris Council gave him to Mephisto for a reason. Even if he kills Lilith or one of the 7 evil’s, they will just be reborn in the burring halls.

well demons are capable of good too…
i mean lillith wanted to save a space in the new world for rathma and save the nephalem from inarius…

Yes, Imperius is his counterpart. And as much a douche as youd expect from the name.

Angels are not generally good in Diablo. Lawful Neutral seems to be the average, though Imperius definitely tangents Lawful Evil.

Its not as much a good vs evil conflict, but Order vs Chaos. And Order can be crushingly oppressive with institutionalized evil and suffering. Its definitely not automatically the good choice.

Diablo isn’t the prime evil. He is simply one of the top 3 demons.

And compared to the power of the Nephalem from Diablo 3 he is absolutely nothing.

This is not true.

Imperius is the only Chaotic Evil angel and the ONLY angel who voted against humans. He is full of hatred and acts based on that hatred. Instead of protecting the fragments of Anu from the Prime Evil WHICH WAS HIS ONE JOB he waited to ambush and try killing the Nephalem who was trying to help save Heaven. As a result of him refusing to carry out his duty and instead trying to carry out his personal vendetta against humans he put the life of every angel in danger. That can only be Chaotic Evil behavior.

Tyrael was Neutral Good (acts based on his moral compass but tries to uphold the law) and is now Chaotic Good (moral compass only).

Auriel is Chaotic Good

Ithereal is Neutral Good

Maltheal was probably Neutral Good.

What i really like about the direction the franchise is going, is the part that the story is becoming more and more grey, and away with the good vs evil stuff. Makes for better stories.

Even Diablo might get an redemption arc after the stuff that happened with Lea.

“I’m totally sorries for killing an innocent’s girl body, mind and soul.”

Yeah he can take that false apology and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine. He is only be upset that he lost. Do you think he would be sorry if he had won, destroyed the heart of Anu and was still the Prime Evil? Of course he wouldn’t.

But the thing is that Lilith is a demon but she isn’t a demon the same way that Diablo and the other major demons are demons. The major demons are projections of the remains of Tathomet meaning they are the evil that Tathomet was and cannot be anything else as they do not exist and cannot ever truly change. But Lilith as a new soul exists as her own being and can change.

you lack imagination.

The fusion with her could very well have altered his personality

No it can’t because he doesn’t exist. He is merely a projection which is also why he cannot be truly killed. You cannot kill what doesn’t exist.

Spoken like a true Believer

Most nonarchangels seems only concerned about the Eternal Conflict. That is pure Lawful Neutral.
