Whispering Chests

Did anyone stock up on the Whispering Keys from the Murmuring Obols vendor to open the locked chests we find out in the world?
I kept forgetting with each new character I made during the betas. If you find a chest and port back to town to get a key when you go back the instance has changed and it becomes a normal chest. Then I would stock up on keys and never see another chest again.
The entire beta I think I ended up having a key on me only one time and the contents were nothing particularly exciting. Maybe one or two rare pieces of loot.
Just wondering if anyone else was opening them and if the drops were ever worth it or are we better off saving all of your obols for gear?

I got a legendary out of one. I’d say it worth stock up on a couple keys at least. I do wish they were spread across the account rather than character specific though.

You could just keep one key on you, and then when you use it TP back to town and replace it.

This is a bit of a tangent but I did not see much else to spend stuff on. You could spent Obols on gear but the drop rate for legendaries was fairly high. Even without that, aspects from dungeons allows you to change your gear to legendary with zero chance of failure. So, I just tried to remember to whispering keys - which was difficult all by itself until the first time I had the chest disappear or be normal fixed the need in my mind.

I’m still pushing for Keys to be ‘account wide’.
Why should I have to spent the account-shared Obols on 3 keys for 3 characters? Just let each key count as being held by everyone so any character can use it without needing to pass it around via Stash.

I opened 4 or 5 of them and they had nothing valuable in them.

And remember that during the Beta (and I assume this weekend) the “magic find” was (will be) cranked thru the roof. Once the game starts for real in June there won’t be 2-3 legendary drops at the end of the boss fight in a dungeon. Or in the Resplendent Chest in the event for saving three merchants from bandits… I doubt keeping more than one key around in your elixir/consumables tab will be worth it. And the Kadala replacements won’t be handing out Legendary and rare items left and right. Getting used to playing with white and blue gear is going to come as a shock for a lot of players.

Devs have already stated that drop rates for the Server Slam have been scaled down to what we will see in the actual release - no cranking thru the roof.

From my experience gambling on items yielded a legendary far more often than the chests, so I stopped buying keys pretty quick.

This was my experience as well. Now, if Whispering Chests end up having set spawn locations that are randomized. I can see people (cough, bots, cough), fly around checking spots and farming Obols. I am assuming the Whisper Chests were probably tuned to be the same as Live Release and forgotten about while the Gambling and World Drops were cranked up.

I agree, if the currency is going to be account wide the things we buy from them should be too

I find it odd that Obols are considered gambling when they have no other use. Yes you can buy the whispering keys, but otherwise it’s just free loot.

I also found the drops from the chests weren’t worth it. Hopefully that changes on release.

Yeah I think it is just a hold over from previous games where you used money. There was a similar misuse of the word with PoE’s Expedition League where one of the NPC’s just gives you loot for her currency and they called it gambling when there was another NPC where you actually gambled by taking risks on which affixes or prefixes you changed but no one called it gambling.

Let everyone here not forget, what odds you had finding items in the previous betas will not apply at launch. They’ve already stated the odds you would find legendaries and the likes were pumped up for the betas and are being significantly reduced when the game goes live.

That is why dungeons are so important. The Final Boss will drop a legendary aspect. So, you can turn your rares into legendaries. Only things like Butcher’s Cleaver and Harlequin Crest are obtainable only from boss fights.

Do we know where the Harlequin Crest is going to drop specifically? It isn’t just a random world drop?

Its random, along with all uniques except for the special things such as the butchers cleaver. Thats the only mob specific drop (other than cosmetics/mounts) Im aware of, but shako dropped for me in about 7 different places in egcb, def wasnt mob or location specific.

Gambling is literally exchanging currency to play a game of chance. What the currency is, is 100% irrelevant. If you are spending any currency on a game to receive a randomized item of varying worth or quality, you are gambling by definition. Obols is just another form of a lottery, which is gambling. The word is being used appropriately.
