Have never really looked into one of those as it always seemed a bit of a gimmick, but if it lets you see more with the damn zoomed in camera on this game, I am all for it!
I don’t know but I’ll be forcing ultra wide 3:1 perspective for PVP. They should really just implement some sort of zoom out feature so ultra wide players don’t have such an advantage.
Yeah if I don’t pick up a monitor between now and then I will too
For PvP it will be a must have.
What’s your budget? And are you looking for a 21:9 monitor or a 32:9? (max ratio D4 supports is 27:9 so you will have black bars on a 32:9 monitor) A very good one is the Alienware AW3423DW (or DWF variant) but those aren’t cheap and being QD-OLED, can risk burn-in if you don’t use it/treat it a certain way, like avoiding static images that are bright (white grey for example) for long periods of time. A good budget ultrawide is the Gigabyte M34WQ. Other ones that I’ve seen a lot of people use and enjoy are any of the LG ultragear ultrawide monitors.
Also, keep in mind, you can always set a custom resolution in your GPU settings to play in 21:9 or 27:9 (max ratio D4 supports) on your 16:9 monitor but you will get black bars on the top and bottom of your monitor and the overall image will be smaller.
I dont need super huge as my desk won’t allow for it so was thinking in the range of a 34inch to 37 so 21:9? currently on a 27inch.
Budget isn’t limited not that I will be going crazy haha
I couldn’t recommend one but I will say to avoid VA. I’m currently running a 30" UW VA and the ghosting + inverse ghosting on games like this is disgusting. It hurts my eyes to look at too, actually injured one of them cause of it. I’m replacing it with a decent IPS soon.
That said, the greater FoV is definitely a noticeable advantage in games like this.
Yeah 21:9 is the sweet spot I think. 32:9 is often not fully supported by games and it’s almost the same pixel count as 4K, so you do “need” a decent GPU to drive good framerates with it. Feel free to check out the Alienware, it is pretty much considered the best display at the moment but yeah the burn-in risk is definitely something to be aware of. I have one and my first unit got some light burn-in. It does have a 3yr warranty and replacement was super easy and hassle free. Others have reported the opposite experience though.
Check out Rtings “The 5 Best Ultrawide Monitors - Spring 2023” list and go from there I’d say. Hardware Unboxed also did decent monitor reviews but I can’t find any of their videos specifically for ultrawides right now.
Agreed with ObedientEboy, VA panels really aren’t great for black-smearing. And considering a lot of Diablo 4 has dark areas, the smearing would likely be common. So look at either IPS or QD-OLED. There might be the odd VA monitor that doesn’t suffer from ghosting and black smearing as much but personally I’d just avoid them.
i almost fell for it during that lost ark phase but i’d never really use it for anything else and i got enough monitors everywhere already heh
decided im not gonna touch any of the widescreen stuff until it’s the new standard, if ever.
currently happy enough with 1440p 16:9 - which i assume is the most common standard rn? idk.
1080p 16:9 is still the most common by a large margin but in terms of standardization, 21:9 and 16:9 ratios are equally supported by nearly every game. There’s only a very small percentage that don’t get 21:9 support.
Most PC gamers don’t have crazy hardware. I believe the top 3 most used GPUs are 3060’s, 2060’s, and 1060’s.
Lots of things, being able to teleport further, cast spells that have a target spot, etc, etc, etc. It is a huge advantage. Sadly I have a small dell monitor that is over 10 years old. O well.
I don’t quite have the room for dual monitors for when I do actual work/gaming and need multi displays to make things easier, so a 34 inch looks to be about the happy medium, enough real-estate to have side by side webpages or apps open and easily viewed plus some wider view gaming when needed. The 27inch has seemed a fraction small for a while now.
I love my Alienware 3423DW. Beautiful screen. 3 year warranty. Bright AF. Immersive. Jet black, 0-light blacks to the point where you adjust brightness calibration to basically 0. 175hz. Accurate colors. Widescreen but the curve angle is not aggressive like some others. Not too big that you have to move your head to see in the corners of the screen (like a minimap in RTS / MOBA)
Sometimes I miss using 2 monitors over this though, particularly when gaming. Don’t really miss it for anything else. I liked having a second monitor to google stuff, pull up Spotify etc without tabbing. That’s the only thing I dislike about swapping from 2x 27” monitors to a 34” OLED widescreen.
I wouldn’t buy any other OLED without the 3 year warranty. I have slight burn in from DPS meters on WoW (careful with pure white static text) for billions of hours a day, but only noticeable when the screen is solid gray, which when does that happen? Things like action bars / maps / other static UI that doesn’t have solid white text never caused any issues.
But I could replace it if I wanted using the warranty. Waiting for newer generations of units before I do the swap. Maybe towards the end of 3 years. They even offer better industry standards on replacing a unit with dead pixels now.
im gonna throw in for the Alienware oled too, i just picked one up as i just built a new computer with an RX 7900XT and 13900kf, and realized my 2 ultrawides didnt have HDR, so after much stressing and pouring over reviews, i got the Alienware (Dell) AW3423DWF, its the freesync version and 165hz, was a little cheaper than the 175hz and gsync version, like $200+ cheaper and im loving it! part of me wants to pick up a 2nd one as it really does look better than my IPS ultrawide of the same resolution (3440x1440). highly recommended.
arent they worried everyone’s just gonna swap every 2.96 years? theyll make zero money lol
especially since it seems like its garanteed to have burns eventually… white text isnt exactly uncommon.
With burn in oleds are starting to sound like something to steer clear of
Hmm flat screen or curved…
if you want to steer clear of oled, i was close to buying the BenQ MOBIUZ EX3415R. something to consider.
Edit: the R might mean renewed as thats the only one coming up on amazon, so if you only find renewed, take off the R
Not sure. Shouldn’t matter though as they refurbish parts and give you that as a replacement, but it comes with new firmware and I’m sure other fixes. Firmware updates for them aren’t available for public download. I suppose this is a potential drawback as well, but everything has its downsides in life and they far outweigh the amazing image quality this thing puts out IMO.
In some countries like Canada, they have to give you a brand new product though so I’m not sure how they handle that from a budget standpoint.
The burn I have from white text is from white text sitting there for 8-12 hour sessions for months on end, and even at that, it’s hardly noticeable even on a solid gray screen. I have no burn in from other UI aspects, just the damage meter.
Ahh that’s good to know its hardly like I would ever leave it running for hours on end with something to burn in…I don’t think! warranties are the same here in Australia, you would get a new replacement.
You’re in good hands then! It’s nice that certain countries have laws like this - great customer protection!
It does pop-up to “refresh” the panel when used for 6 hours or more at a time. (This is a 7 minute process where you can’t use the screen) I prolly ignored that a few times while trying to nerd out on classic wow server launches so it could have even been my bad.
Either way, I never worry about it since I know I’m protectsd
maybe the samsung G7 neo? i got the G9 neo and im very happy with it so far (had it for about 2 months now)
