Okay, I’m not sure what the deal is, but the game story has been a very important part for me since Diablo 2. Simple, easy to understand, same with 3, but hell if I can understand the Diablo 4 story.
We got a very cool introduction to the Diablo 4 story in the Diablo 3, with the creation of the world, with the mommy and daddy of the world. Now I’m in Diablo 4 and I’m confused.
The main villain is Lilith, why? She’s actually trying to save the world from her hell family. The angel daddy, well, he’s trying to undo the world because, well, nobody loves people, not heaven or hell. But we spend the whole story kissing the angel’s bum and hunting mommy Lilly, again, why? Someone help me understand how she’s the bad guy here. I mean, she’s not crazy, she’s empathic to the people of Sanctuary, most of them, okay she’s a demon so she’s gonna have some crazy in the mix, but nothing compared to the Angel. So why am I helping his Crusaders and hunting Lilly? Still not getting it.
And yeah, I played the expansion, left me even more confused than I already was. The Lords of Hell wanna turn it into their sick playground and the Angels still don’t care. So yeah, what the hell is going on?
Outside of the game (in the books) she wanted to use the nephalem to wipe out the forces of Heaven and Hell so she could be the queen bee. She did not care for “humanity” she just wanted to use others. This is one of the reason why her son Rathma hated her.
As opposed to who? The Lords of Hell who want to turn Sanctuary into some hellscape sicko playground? Heaven who on one hand does not care and on the other it would rather kill everyone? So who is the lesser evil here?
From the union of angel and demon the were created. Inarius wanted to eradicate the nephalem or ‘first born’, whom he eyed as abominations, but it was Lilith who first saw their potential. She realized the nephalem had the potential to become more than both angel and demon, and wanted to harness their power for her own ends. To this end she murdered most (if not all) of the renegade angels and demons. For her transgressions, Inarius banished her to the Void. Not fully able to eradicate the nephalem, Inarius now sought to contain their abilities, manipulating the Worldstone to dampen their powers.
She’s awkward. That’s basically it. Imagine an exiled xenomorph queen from the Alien movies, trying to communicate to some colonists that she’s here to guide them to a safer, more independent future, away from the clutches of both the other aliens & the soulless corporation that intends to use their slave labor to glorify its own legacy. I bet the colonists would be split. Some of them would be like:
And some would be like:
“Yes mommy.”
So Sanctuary’s response to her was pretty realistic. Second - you bring religion into it, and you mix it with the martial traditions, and people tend to fall in line. Fear + awe does that. Plus - look at Inarius. He’s glorious. (From a distance.)
As for the player character… meh. That part is on rails. The player character has no personality. That thread is mainly carried forward by Neyrelle’s fixations & Lorath’s acquiescence. And remember, Lorath’s background as a Horadrim would’ve made him slightly biased, no matter how neutral he wants you to believe he is.
So the last element is of course the wolf. He’s much older than Lilith & is more practiced at manipulating folk. Without a strong and independent character pushing back at all the factions simultaneously, the “more experienced entity” will get its way. Clearly that’s Mephisto. He managed (somehow) to get rid of both Inarius & Lilith, without setting foot in Sanctuary. Feel the power.
Anyway, that’s the only logical answer: Mephisto is that capable. But the writers… eh… I don’t think they have what it takes to make it look convincing.
No she didn’t. She never sought to destroy her creation, in fact she saw it as the only way to break free from the cycle of war Hell and Heaven are locked in. And that’s my point. Lilith is the only one who wants Sanctuary to live. The angels want it destroyed, the demons want to eat it up or toy with it or other sick stuff. Lilith is the only one who gives a crap. Which is why I don’t get why she’s the villain.
