What happens to chars after S1?

What will happen to the characters and their items after a season’s end? Is everything transferred to eternal? Are the items deleted?

If the latter happened, this would be a huge bummer consider maxing out a char w.r.t. items is what the series really is about (or at least used to).

Characters move from the seasonal to the eternal realm with all their level/items except the items that only exist in the season. (so, at the end of season 1, your amulets and rings are probably going to be deleted)

Uff, that makes it a bit pointless then to farm stuff if it gets deleted anyways…

if its like diablo 3, they get moved to non-season via self claim or mailbox. Its going to be goofy if we get 4 stash tabs for s1 and fill them up and if we already have our 4 stash tabs filled up and you only get (10) free legendary/special loots sitting in the claim tab…

Unless of course they give us 10 stash tabs at the end of season 1

Well thats how seasons work in general. What there is to add is that sometimes season themes are so good that they make it into the eternal game.

In PoE basically every season theme goes to eternal realm - in Diablo 3 some of them got taken for eternal realm aswell.

However “Eternal Realm” sounds kinda people would play there ---- usually the eternal server is more a “Graveyard Realm” as nobody ever plays there and everybody is playing some seasonal hero - hopping from season to season

Well, I hate to break it for you, but it is very likely that by the time an expansion comes out everything you farmed for will be worthless anyways, even on the eternal realm.
Better not get attached to any of your loot.
You may want to wait for the very last expansion to come out before starting playing.

What do you mean “in general”. That’s neither how it was in D2 nor in D3…I figured you don’t need the entire mechanics of a season, just the items you found and then make them unobtainable in eternal

@Garnix: I mean if patches add content that’s not an issue, but at that point in time (i.e., the time of the season), the char was uber and that’s what (I believe) most of us D2 relics are after.

In D3 most seasonal items did not carry over to normal realm for example - so the current season theme in D3 gives you a selfmade primal ancient and an altar that gives you tons of power — when season is over thats gone.

Same will hapen here — all normal stuff will be sent to you into (this is a estimated guess - but pretty sure it will be that way as it is the blizzard way of doing stuff) take out only stash tabs and you have a time frame of 30 days to claim it. if you dont claim it they are gone.

Wow, wasn’t aware that self-made primals would be deleted  What the hell is this design choice…

was the same with those angel weapons the patch before (or was it even one before that) — they been gone after season  - but i dont think most people would even notice as they (like i said above) just jump from season to season (at least those people i play with do that all the time)

To extend the life of DOA content with bells and whistles. They think people play their game to do the same thing over and over every 3 months and buy a battle pass. I wanted an end game not a hamster wheel (seasons).

Everything should be transferred over to Eternal from your S1 progress. You should be able to enjoy ALL the new gems on ETERNAL that you received if you PLAYED S1.
You will not be able to ACQUIRE new hearts playing ETERNAL after S1 unless BLIZZARD BAKES S1 into the game. THEY WILL NOT BAKE S1 into the Eternal realm, the seasonal event S1 is not good.

true statement for the most part… now there will be 147 or 149 people always playing on that realm (all the ones with a shako) haha

Yeah, I mean the same was true in D2. But it was always nice to look back to a char from a previous ladder and see what you accomplished. If they’ll delete items then chars will be half naked all the time, so one might as well delete them and then it’s really just time wasted in a sense (and I don’t really have that time any more nowadays).

ARPG games, like Diablo, are about constantly playing new and new characters, not attaching to one single character or even to the items you had.

I understand where are you coming from, I was playing MMORPGs for 16 years exclusively too but this is how ARPG works. And in MMORPGs the gear you farmed becomes obsolete after each patch anyway, only transmog is everlasting so no difference here.

I am coming from D2, so no you don’t understand I think. In D2 after a ladder season, stuff got moved to non-ladder (non-seasonal). So you still had all your progress to look at if you wanted to, but effectively everyone played ladder, because most rune words were ladder only.

Sorry, my D2 experience with seasons is limited. I see what you mean. Lets see what happens in D4, to mee it seems like not even developers know what they are doing.

From the Season News Blog posted on the 6th. You only lose the Season Mechanic which is the malignant gems. You do get a Scroll of Amnesia though which gives you a free total reset of talents and paragon so you can select a build on the Eternal Realm that works without those Season gems.

Once the Season has ended, the character you made and its progress will be transferred to the Eternal Realm. All items you collected, including in your Seasonal stash, will be transferred too. You can take this character into Sanctuary whenever you please, but Season-specific features such as Malignant Hearts will no longer be accessible.

You are good. D4 will not delete your items, XP, etc. when the Season ends. Only the Season mechanic related stuff goes away (malignant gems).

Sounds like a horrible idea to me tbh: in the end I will have a half finished char. What do I do with the XP and all the rest that is already available in non-seasonal, no one plays that realm anyways, so I might as well delete the entire char since nothing is lost.

To me, playing D2 was always trying to get a Uber-char each ladder and then let him rest in peace after the ladder season is done. The full transfer to non-ladder with all items served as a nice memory, like a picture to look at after some time. Like said above, when the fun stuff gets deleted (in this case fancy gems), then I personally don’t see a purpose of playing other than having a “fresh” start.

It is a personal decision and a fresh start is part of it. Many people like seasons for the following reasons:

  • New mechanics to play around with and experiment with new builds. Something different.
  • XP buff as part of the core game (free) Battlepass track makes leveling alts easier
  • Keeping the gear, XP etc (except the gems) so it is not “wasted” time really. The char is still playable and there, along with any account bound gear.
  • Cosmetic rewards. Some are part of the core game Battlepass track (free), and others are paid if you like them.

It is really a means to level an alt in a different way, or obtain Season only cosmetics. Totally up to you if you wish to play the game that way or just stay on the Eternal Realm.
