I put about 5000 hours into Diablo 2 over the years, but one of the other games I’ve played more is Skyrim. It’s like my comfort food of video games. The world, the npc voices, the music, it’s just so relaxing when I play it, like a security blanket lol, the imperials walls and towers used to make me feel so safe.
What other games have you sunk a tremendous amount of hours into and what makes you keep going back?
Titan quest - Items from leveling are more interesting than from end-game diablo and plenty of more builds to expiremnt with with more mechanics and more variety of mobs by idk… 1200%? 5000? A LOT.
btw @Tazzy if you like D2 check Hero Siege you will feel like in home with itemization and runes system.
I will definitely spend more time in D4 than D3. Depending on where they take the game over the next couple of years maybe it becomes 2nd place. No game will ever top time played in D2.
Kind of an unfair comparison since D4 has only been out for a month and a half, but definitely D3, Marvel Heroes, Torchlight, TL2, and WoW. I have 130 hours already in D4, which beats Skyrim but not Oblivion. Not much else comes to mind.
Chrono Trigger (still play it to this day), Mario 64, Zelda 64 Ocarina of Time, Borderlands 2, X-com, D2 and D3, Starcraft 1 and 2, Warcraft 1 to 3, LoL, just off the top of my head.
If we’re counting MMORPG’s then it would be EQ, WoW, FFXI, and FFXIV.
Comes down to gameplay, story, and replay-ability for me, depending on the game of course.
Dungeons and Dragons Online, Star Trek Online, Champions Online, Rift, NeverWinter, Marvel Heroes, Twilight 3, Baldur’s Gate 3 (okay only in Beta but…), Star Wars: The Old Republic, EverQuest, RuneQuest, Ultima Online, Apex Legends, League of Legends, Call of Duty (any).
To be fair, many of these games I no longer play for a variety of reasons but that was not the question.
Diablo 2/LoD - I would actually consider myself almost addicted back then.
Diablo 3
World of Warcraft - honestly a lot there depending on the expansion.
Different Genres but also
Stardew valley
Staxel - I liked it better than Stardew even. More minecrafty but better sleep/quest mechanics.
House Flipper - Power washing, cleaning, painting, gardens, etc. Scratches that itch.
It totally blame a former Community Manger (Nevalistis) for the Stardew and Staxel time sink. I think I lost months.
D4 is going to eat a fair amount of time, esp come winter when it is too cold to garden and do outside projects. Looking forward to see how they address some of the major concerns players have, what they add to the game for QoL, etc. Hopefully Season 2 is a more interesting theme. I am having fun with my druid though and am glad I saved leveling one for the Season.
Path of Exile (5years+), a lot more than D3 (at 4.5k+ hours), but a lot less than D2 (closing in on 20 years…).
Perfect World International (MMO) (3years+)
There are however some games that are pure gems (maybe not in their entirety, but certain parts of them definitely clicked with me) and have a special place in my memories, games that I didn’t play for that long
Age of Empires 1&2
Quake 2,3
Counter-Strike
Heroes of Might & Magic 2, 3
Witcher 2,3
TES Series: Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim
Titan Quest
Grim Dawn
Clive Barker’s Undying
Warcraft, Starcraft series
Guild Wars series
Emperor: Battle for Dune
old NFS series
Assassin’s Creed series
Serious Sam 2
Baldur’s Gate series
Neverwinter nights and other similar
…and many others. I have over 500 games in my library.
I’m not surprised to find lots of W-RPGs or MMO players here, so it’s time for some J-RPG goodness :
Final Fantasy Tactics (ps1 1998 / psp War of the Lions versions)
The FF series in general (my favs : 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 12 - the series died after that in my humble opinion sadly, FF16 isn’t even a RPG)
the Suikoden series
Shadow Hearts 1 & 2
Star Ocean 2 & 3
Brigandine ! (Legend of Forsena / Grand Edition mainly, but even though it’s inferior, Legend of Runersia is ok and I’m glad someone made a new one)
Grandia series
(there are many more worth mentionning but I’ll stop there – not sure if I spent as many hours in all these as in Diablo 1, 2, 3 and 4 though - they are fun to replay but shouldn’t last you thousands of hours even though I’ve been replaying FFT every year for 25+ years now…)
…and even though it’s not a JRPG series (even though the last 2 episodes got quite a few RPG mechanics) let’s not forget the Metal Gear Solid series, I also spent many many hours replaying them.
btw. Check hero siege now it’s less than 1$ on discount on steam. Soon it will get 2.0 giga update with a lot of reworks and better stylized graphic. also offline mode available.
