The 2.0 Campfire Chat made it clear that glyph leveling is 1) moving to The Pit and 2) to new mechanics. But nothing was said about how Nightmare Dungeons work now, since glyph leveling was the entire point of them pre-2.0.
D4 team, what’s the story here? I’m guessing (edit: bad connection ate the rest…) that Nightmare Dungeons are getting the “Profane Mindcage” treatment: these Dungeon Keys are going to become a player-controlled challenge+reward knob for dungeons.
It would be super helpful to understand two things prior to the PTR: 1) what’s the intended role of Nightmare Dungeons in 2.0 and 2) what related mechanics changes to expect.

probably unlocking an aspect. As some are minimum reward for completion. But alas you can said find aspect just playing the game.

Well, Maybe an idea that nightmare dugeons could be used for upgradeing the aspect? Otherwise yeah, I wonder the same thing now you brought it up.
nmd gona serve for whisper quests to complete i think
NMDs are gonna be for crafting materials, they already said that in the video
Pits = difficulty upgrade and glyph XP
NMD = crafting
The good part is both will feel more natural IMO… NMDs won’t just give mats if and when you defeat the final boss, but also chests, events, elite packs (so that way the whole attempt doesn’t fail if not complete as opposed to Pits)
The Pits on the other hand will require beating higher level mobs to power increase (or at least reliably power increase) thus Pit runs will no longer be a chore but have a milestone built-in

Thanks, that’s exactly what I was looking for. Had to step away a few times during the Chat, and that’s probably what I missed!
One more thing, the pit upgrades your difficulty globally
If you defeat pit 20 then the entire game becomes of T1 difficulty… So is the case for pits #35, 50 and 65 upgrading your global difficulty to T2, T3 and T4 respectfully
Just a thing to take care of and keep in mind (in other words don’t push too fast or you might get caught in trouble, or who knows, a trouble you might like)

Prolly have to select difficulty at the Statue still.

Yeah I believe you’re correct on this
Yeah they had someone asked in the campfire Q&A to clarify why we still needed NMD.
With them streamlining the dungeon to no longer having gates, and adding more mobs density to make up for it. An we will be able to do NMD at level 1 now.
I am ok with this change, esp. almost everything you do in the dungeon will reward master work material. Opening chest, killing elites, and boss will have an actual benefit now.

I feel that would be problematic. I have the impression you can actively select your torment level once you have unlock it.
It’s gonna be a problem if I accidentally pushed hard and manage to finish a very hard Pit dungeon but didn’t realize that will make everything the same level. Now, every part of the game will be really really tough.

They did say they were going add a few more locations to be able to switch your world difficulty, So I think you have to choose to switch into the Torments, I also believe was in patch note or campfire, i don’t remember where I heard. But can switch back to any difficulty at any time.

Agreed, the D4 team was explicit that The Pit unlocks new difficulties, but doesn’t force them on you. There was a big emphasis on choice of challenge, under the player’s control.
They will continue to remain as garbage of content as before, only now there is more necesity to run them forever, even if you don’t want to. Instead of making them fun to run so you want to “choose” to do them, they are instead “forcing” you to run them, without having to fix them.
NM dungeons are to get masterworking materials. They will drop off elite packs, come out of chests, and drop more off the end boss.
That is correct. You can select whatever difficulty tier you want that you have unlocked.

This makes NM dungeons more worthwhile to run. The fact that you can increase its difficulty too reminds me of the old NM 100 difficulty back in S0/S1.
Players nowadays dismiss NM 100 runs. But if we say I did NM 100 Torment 4, that feels more impactful.

Masterworking mats, in pit no longer drops those mats, now Pits is exclusive to upgraded dificulties and level up Glyphs, now Masterworking are obtain only in NM Dungeons and Hordes
Except that dungeons in general, not just Nightmare Dungeons, are absolute garbage. They are just not fun to run, no variety with them, and they just feel like a chore. Now they will be even moreso.
Cerrigar and 1 or 2 more locations that I can’t remember off the top of my head. We’ll also be able to set our home teleport location but I feel like Cerrigar will be the main hub for most other than the Tree for whispers.
