Could someone explain to me how The Pit works?
Do you have to kill a number of monsters or
does the boss portal appear randomly?
I’'m having very slow progression thru levels.
As always,any help is appreciated.

Are you not completing them because of timer(which I think shouldnt exist) or are you not able to comete the pit at all?
Sorry, just reread your post. You have to kill a certain number of monsters to get the red passage which takes you to the boss. I always try to speed run the 1st map killing what I can until I make it to the port to second level. Once there I try to run though mobs, line them up and obliterate until the red port appears to the boss. Once thru, go straight up to the boss , defeat him and then a chest pops up along with , I dont know what you call it, looks like a stand of some kind. You click it and use to upgrade your glyphs. Upgrading your glyphs is the main reason of pits.
i am kind of a noob. but here is some info that might help. and hopefully others who know more will comment and correct and/or add to what i say.
so you have stage 1, then a portal, stage 2, then a portal, and finally the boss
-
you will have to kill a certain number of mobs in stage 1 for the portal to appear. there is a bar on top right area of interface to watch. somebody commented on another thread i made and it seems that maybe the map for stage 1 is finite and fixed, so try not to skip mobs.
-
portal appears
-
you enter stage 2. again you are killing mobs to make the next portal appear. according to a person who was commenting on another thread like this, stage 2 is maybe sort of an infinite map, unlike stage 1. so you can skip mobs and it will go on and on until you kill enough mobs. then the boss portal will appear
-
boss portal appears
-
boss fight fail. if you do not complete the pit and kill the boss within the time limit you will still get some drops
-
boss fight success within time limit. you will get some upgrade points, maybe 4? tries for your paragon glyphs. if you are doing a level 30 pit and you do an upgrade on a level 1 glyph, you might get several levels.
otherwise you basically need to run a pit 10 levels higher than the glyph for 100% upgrade rate. so a pit 30 has 100% chance to upgrade a level 20 glyph. for a level 30 glyph running a level 30 pit is is 0% chance of success. as you close the gap from the level 10 difference the success rate gets less and less.
hope this makes sense and is helpful.
Think of it like an xp fill bar. Focus on Elites/Groups of Elites/Very large groups of monsters. Skip everything else. Take shrines they are a huge help. Considering pre-buffing with potions and incense.
just a correction here. Stage two isnt infinite. You can skip mobs, but you shouldnt skip too much. Else youll end up having to go back to stage 1.
Just to affirm what Nyurei said - concentrate on getting elite mobs, but also kill a certain amount of ‘trash’ mobs along the way. You don’t need to get all of them, but by all means do kill those in your path. Don’t go looking into every corner (or backtracking) for stragglers, though, as that will eat up time.
Number of monsters.
What I do is I try to full 100% the first level.
Then level 2 just go in a direction and kill till I see the portal.
In the past, when I ran it like old NMD, there were instances where I would have to go back to stage 1 to get what I missed. I am not sure if that can happen any more, it seems stage 2 always has enough monsters to trigger the portal. Not sure if they changed it or it is the way I clear stage 1 now.
