Can someone clarify weapon expertise to me. If I use a Mace for HOTA do I need to use the mace expertise. Can I use another maxed expertise or do I need to use the weapon I do use. Thank you
It’s the opposite you want to slot a weapon you don’t use actively.
Hota uses 2H maces only. That means while hitting with Hota your expertise in 2H hammer is active.
The expertise slot is for the weapon expertise you want to be always active. Say you slot 2h swords for example, it will act as if you’re using Hota with both 2H hammer and 2H swords.
Even if you use multiple skills that use your other equipped weapons, the expertise weapon you choose to slot will be always active for any skill on top of the weapon used during that skill.

Oh wow so I was doubling down I use a mace and put Mace as my expertise lol wow. What would be a nice compliment to put into mastery for a 2H Mace. Thank you for clarifying this I had no idea clearly
The most commonly used expertise is 2H AXE.
It works with almost every build since it’s a straight up increase to damage on vulnerable targets and almost every optimal build has to use vulnerable. 2H axes are almost never used as active weapons since 2H swords and 1H swords offer natural CRITICAL DAMAGE. So you would rarely activate this expertise if you don’t slot it here.
2H SWORD offers perma bleed effect on all skills which can be useful to activate some synergies. Sadly some of these synergies seem to be bugged (like the unique Torso effect not working on bleeds other than bleeds coming directly from skills).
2H SPEAR offers the 10% lucky hit for all skills. Can be interesting if you rely heavily on lucky hit effects.
Note that from the text, only the first part of the expertise effect is active in the slot. So the slot only offers the initial bonus at the level you’re at and not the secondary bonus that you unlock at lvl 10.

Thank you so much for explaining this. My Axe expertise is level 8 so I guess I need to use an axe to get it to level 10 
Dunno what level or tier you’re at. But leveling an expertise doesn’t take that long. Go to a dense dungeon that you can easily farm/tank. Equip any yellow 2H axe (or any other weapon you want to level) with decent stats and high item level and just WW/farm until expertise maxes out.
In T4 in the dungeon Champions Demise, it took me very little time to max out every weapon by using weapons found literally in that same dungeon 
Don’t forget to set that weapon as the weapon used for WW.
WW is very good for this because IIRC the experience is per hit and not per mob killed ? I’m not 100% certain here.

Hey I’m level 80 and thank you for the suggestions you been extremely helpful. Any dungeons you recommend for exp. I will do as you suggested and respec for WW with 2H axe to get me going.
you use 2 handed mace and therefore get both bonuses on mace expertise, But choosing 2H axe gives you 15% extra dmg to vulnerable enemies but not extra critical strike chance. you only get the 1st bonus for expertise chosen .
Short version. get both bonuses of the weapon used for your skill/s
get 1st bonus effect from your chosen expertise.
You’re welcome. As for exp I don’t know, with the recent changes from the latest patch I would say running nightmare dungeons is the way maybe ? Someone must have done the math somewhere on the internet
Before this I always ran Champion’s Demise in world tier 4 with a group of at least 3, each taking a “wing” then resetting. It would net something like 600-900k exp per 2-3min.
Thanks buddy literally did the above and got everything to level 10. I also notice my hota hit harder with 2h axe mastery. Thanks for explaining how weapon mastery works
