With my staff I get 1,712 dps and my attack power is 3,641. When I equip a staff with 955 dps and focus with 769 dps, for a total of 1724 dps my attack power drops to 2,821! This is probably due to affixes and damage buckets BUT my question is this: When I look at my Materials & Stats button, the staff shows Weapon Damage of 1,712 and my staff/focus show 1,437!! How is that possible? Thanks!
Sounds like you are missing some base stat points (intelligence or all stats) on the weapon. Which does affect your output as well.
Attack power is the worst stat you can look in your spredsheet, it’s doesn’t take account of MANY statyou can have lower attack powerbut hit harder
Welcome to blizzard math. All poorly documented and not clear.
As Shadowstorm suggets, I’d start with intelligence stat (or all stats affix) on gear, then look at the other damage affixes.
If you mouse over the damage in stats it will show you the min - max numbers. The max should match the two numbers combined. The number displayed is the mid point.
You need to look at build synergy as well. For instance, if you are using a Lightning Sorc but all your affixes on the staff are for chill, you will lose damage.
Next, along the same line, make sure that the focus has other damage modifiers that you use. For instance, Flickering Frost Bolt add Vulnerable; Mystical Ice Armor uses Vulnerable to add to Barrier. However, if you do not have any vulnerable, that talent is useless. So, if the focus does add to Vulnerable but the old staff does, that would reduce damage.
