Varshan gets his shield and seemingly never lets it down for minutes and minutes at a time. Very annoying. Happens nearly every time.

I think you should try to remove all mercenaries (both of Primary & Reinforcement Mercenary) before fighting Varshan.
I heard that there is MAJOR bug that when Varshan hit your mercenaries, he will gain a huge amount of barrier.

yup its worst for Hardcore players , me and full party got wiped in Torment 3 because of this Varshan barrier bug and we have zero sroll of escape…
