Allowing rerolls on a unique should be a thing. Extracting (and/or imprinting) a skill or ability should also be a thing. Why not give the player a bit of control and allow the unique item to actually be… unique?
Here are some common definitions of unique:
particularly remarkable, special, or unusual.
“a unique opportunity to see the spectacular Bolshoi Ballet”
belonging or connected to (one particular person, group, or place).
“a style of architecture that is unique to Portugal”
being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else.
“this discovery was unique in history”
In diablo uniques refer to the unique power having a single, unique, set of affixes as well as only existing for a single item type.
The first common definition tends to apply because they can have special/unusual affixes that don’t normaly appear on the item type.
As well the second common definition applies as the unique power belongs to a single item type. As opposed to legendary aspects that can exist on multiple item types/slots.
There is only one kind of item, both type and affix set, that can have that power.
They are a unique item: base item + power + affixes have a single combination.
The third common definition doesn’t apply to diablo uniques, as there can exist more than one instance of the item.
The item is unique because it has fixed affixes, a name, and sometimes unique art (in the case of the Grandfather). Allowing a unique’s affixes to be rerolled wouldn’t make it more unique. It would make it a Legendary + item.
The weapon should get random accessories like a Nintendo Mii or a Reddit avatar or something…
This is your Doombringer! There are many like it, but yours has a Christmas hat on its pommel!
