I think many of the complaints regarding the story is that it didnt meet expectations.
Vessel of Hatred promotion led people to believe that we were going to have a resolution to the Mephisto arc. Instead we had a resolution, hopefully, to the Neyrelle arc and the Mephisto arc continues.
With at least a year to the next expansion it seems that a lot was left unresolved storywise.
It isnt that VoH was bad per se. There is quite a lot to like about it. It just isnt what people were expecting at all and it left a lot of loose ends we will have to wait a while to resolve.
It almost feels like the VoH campaign is a part 1 of 2. Too bad it isnt.
Neyrelle isn’t going anywhere. They set her up as the next Horadrim expert. She’s the new Deckard Cain. Sigh.
And agree on the ending. It wasn’t satisfying and felt very abrupt. Almost like there was that was supposed to happen or was going to be fleshed out, but they ran out of time and shortcutted the ending.
Complaints are valid because of the stupid decision that the heros of the story make. Still dont know why we killed Lilith. What was the point of Nayrell going alone? Why is everyone in sanctuary so darn naive? And why JC made me laugh at the end? Holy shiiiiiiiit it was so bad.
it was a little obvious something wrong was going to happen with the crystal otherwise we would never have to deal with the main villain but the bosses and characters were cool and i dont see why anyone would complain about it.
you get pretty much limitless gameplay with all the endgame and gearing.
My complaint is mephisto should of been the boss in the xpac, it’s very obvious they are prolonging this to sell more expansions. 2 years per prime evils? When do we actually see diablo in this diablo game and how much is it going to cost us?
I agree Mephisto should have been the boss in VoH.
Also, another complaint I have is Urivar.
Urivar had a total lack of character development and story involvement. Definitley mismanaged that character big time.
Frankly, the whole church part of the story was a weak story device. It had very little to do with the devlopment of the story and seemed kind of pointless.
I suspect many complaints would have been prevented if events were unfold a bit differently and we would actually at least fight Mephisto himself during VoH campaign. For example - Mephisto could break out of Soulstone on his own (for example when Soulstone was placed near Akarat’s body he could make last desperate attempt to prevent being purged / suppressed for thousand years and manifest all his remaining essence first in a form of a wolf (Phase 1) and then in his true form (Phase 2). And after defeating him and forcing him back into the Soulstone we would suddenly get betrayed by Eru (which would make his betrayal much more harsh) who would incapacitate us and Neyrelle, grab the stone and Akarat’s body and escape. That would have had same results (Mephisto surviving and posessing Akarat in the end), but at least players would get a proper Mephisto boss fight and Eru’s betrayal would have been much more impactful.
However, the idea of Mephisto posessing Akarat’s body is very interesting and a good foundation for future expansion(s). If he would pretend to be reborn Akarat (which he likely would) he would have massive influence based on Akarat’s reputation alone and have a massive army of human followers in addition to his demonic hordes. Now instead of chasing one Wanderer (Neyrelle) and fightning just his demons on the way we would also need to deal with a Zakarum faithful army (who would likely gladly obey their “reborn prophet” and fiercely protect him even without demonic influence required) and maybe even Crusaders that could fanatically follow the founder of their order. That is also a good setup for Crusader class addition (as one of them who would see through Mephisto’s lies and have to oppose both Mephisto and his former comrades) and events unfolding in some new western region of the world, most likely where Zakarum faith and influence would still be strong since Akaristo would likely travel there to gather followers and influence. And the Age of Hatred Lorath spoke about might be more than just a narrative metaphor and an actual bloody war we would be a part of.
Agreed. Mephisto should have been the final boss, not his avatar. It felt like those “it was all just a dream” cop-outs. Since we went back to Kurast, I couldn’t help but compare this to D2 LoD expansion. In that we fought Baal in that same arena. Not his avatar, but he himself!
Wasn’t a fan of the story but the rest is glorious!
The new zone is damn pretty, the new class plays like a Ferrari, progression is nice and the hurdles you have to beat are rewarding, items fell good when you get a better roll. What if Mephisto pierces the veil and hell spills into Sanctuary including the other two prime evils and heaven sees this and decides to open it’s gates and it’s the eternal conflict 2.0 but in sanctuary this time! This would be climax expansion for me haha.
Sometimes I wonder if they are intentionally ruining the lore and the story because they are angry. Is there anyone on the story team who is a fan of the franchise lore and story?
