I can equip it, put an aspect into it and change the affix, but I can’t upgrade it.

Having this issue here too… I do not know what to do? Did a clean reinstall made de trick?
I cannot upgrade gear at blacksmith since this latest update.

What is Masterworking?
Masterworking is an endgame system that allows you to improve the current affixes of your gear. Special crafting materials found in the Pit of the Artificers are used to apply Masterworking on your items at the Blacksmith. This system is extremely important at endgame and when trying to push through the hardest content in Diablo 4.
Masterworking, like Tempering, is a crafting system that will upgrade all the affixes on an item. Only Ancestral Legendary items that have two Tempered affixes or Uniques can be masterworked at the Blacksmith.
TL;DR the old upgrade isn’t available anymore, it’s been replaced by an endgame feature
Are we not able to upgrade a piece of gear 4-5 times at the blacksmith like we were able to in previous seasons? That was available very early in the game. I wasn’t talking about masterworking. Is that the replacement for the previous upgrade system?
Experiencing a similar issue, I am unable to temper or upgrade items on console (PS5) and I am now a level 34. Husband is having same issue on PC. Both opened the chest before speaking to the blacksmith during the tempering quest.
I have the same issue with Season 4. I am currently at level 51 and I can tamper gear, but not upgrade those in Blacksmith (for example Zivek) like I did previously. So, I cannot add SOCKETS to gear and not upgrade them.
