I have been using D4 since it was released. In all that time, i’ve been unable to just drag and drop skills from the tree into my skill bar. I can right click to remove, but when I left click to “grab” the skill i want, i’m unable to drop it into any slot on the skill bar. As a result, when it comes to adding, i have no ability to add or change a skill on the fly. I’ve seen youtube videos of “how to change skills”, and they just drag and drop. If i do that, I end up with no skills on my bar! If i want something different, I have to RESPEC all, and redo all the skills in the tree. HELP!
You can’t do it from the skill tree, you do it from the Skill pop-up menu by hitting the ‘S’ key by default on your keyboard. This will pop up a menu that you can then drag and drop from onto your hotbar.
If you’re using WASD controls for movement, you may want to check what your hotkey changed to in order to open that skill menu pop-up (not the skill tree).

This IS from pressing the “S” key. I use a mouse for movement, so that’s not the issue. As I mentioned, I can right click to remove, but when I press the left mouse button, it selects the skill I want, but doesn’t slot it into any slot…it just rejects the process…
Ok so you hit S, it shows the skill menu. You Left Click a skill, it now appears as your cursor so you can move it. You then hover over a hotkey down at the bottom until the border itself for said hotkey turns white, and you left click again. You’re telling me nothing happens?
Pretend the top-left corner of the Skill Icon is the mouse cursor, and hover it over the middle of a hotkey.
Yep…nothing happens. The skill just goes back to being in the “S” menu. I can’t move an item from slot to slot either…nothing wants to “stick” on the skill bar. Frustrating doesn’t begin to tell the story…
BTW…thanks for responding and trying to help. I’m wondering if I’ve just got a setting wrong.
The actual place your cursor needs to be to drop it is a bit finicky. So even if it’s over the skill slot, the game might not see it as such. Try moving the cursor with the skill on it around in the area where it looks like you can drop it to see if you can find the sweet spot.
I had the same problem and then realized that when you try and put the icon right on the box it wasnt working. By aiming the top left corner of the skill to the middle of the box it works. Maybe the same thing for you? Or maybe I am misunderstanding things.
This may sound dumb, but if you’re willing we can run some tests.
Put the game into Windowed mode, whatever your resolution is, just take it down a notch. So if you run 2560x1440 change it to 1920 x 1200 for example. Test it again see if that works. Make sure the windowed screen isn’t touching the bottom of your desktop screen, try to center it on the screen.
If not, try going into the Gameplay options, click on HUD Configuration, switch that to the other option. So if you currently have it “Centered” switch it to “Left” or vice versa, see if that helps anything.
If that doesn’t work, go into Controls > Key Bindings > Combine Move/Interact/Basic Skill Slot. Make sure that’s checked. Try again. Then uncheck it, and try moving your skills again.
WOW…talk about finicky! I have to hold the skill to the RIGHT of the box I want it in…hovering directly over the slot does nothing. Thanks so much!!!

Yeah, it is a bit…odd in how it aligns.
I treat the top-left corner of the skill box as the center and align that with the middle of the hotkey and it drops it in.
I sometimes get in a hurry and forget to do that.
