I don’t get it. Why wouldn’t the ultra texture quality setting require more VRAM instead of more system RAM? I have 64 GB of system RAM and a 3080 Founder’s Edition. Ultra texture quality makes the game hitch like crazy; high texture quality is much smoother. Why does the tooltip for the setting reference system RAM instead of VRAM?
Because system ram is about regular computer tasks. VRAM is about graphics related tasks.
Edit: if it references system ram, that is probably an error. It should reference VRAM.
Or did I misinterpret what you were asking?
Right, I’m saying that the tooltip talks about system RAM. That doesn’t make sense, when the texture quality is going to depend on your VRAM. And who the hell has 32 GB of VRAM?
Textures are loaded in system RAM and transferred to GPU only when needed. The same texture is usually stored in many resolutions but only what res is needed based on the distance from camera is loaded on GPU.
If that’s the case, then why does it hitch so much on ultra when I have 64 GB of system RAM?
That’s a 10 GB VRAM card, you need 12 GB for Ultra textures, the card is the cause of your hitching. I agree that the tooltip should reference BOTH requirements.
Im running 32GB of system ram, 3090 Titan, maxed settings - no issues.
I heard there is a max reso patch. I dont remember downloading anything different, but people are saying if you download it the game is smoother. Not sure if that is an issue. I havent checked, this is second-hand info from another post I read about a week ago.
The transfer between CPU RAM and GPU RAM is a slow operation and probably you don’t have enough GPU RAM and that operation is done many times on your machine. Upgrade your GPU, lol.
IIRC when I installed D4, there was an option checked to download high-res textures or something like that.
Also, it’s a 3080 FE. It’s not even that old of a GPU, wtf?
Sorry man, dunno. Maybe ask the tech thead?
Digital Foundry made a technical analysis video on this issue.
I’ve used both a 4070 Ti and a 4090(currently using 4090) and the 4070 Ti only occasionally had bouts of stuttering at native 4k ultra with g-sync capping the framerate at 119. It never happens on a 4090.
Because your Vram will be used up and it requires swapping textures in and out.
Only solution is to purchase a card with a higher amount of VRAM.
It also depends on the screen resolution used, with 4K using up considerably more VRAM than 1440P, or 1080P.
Without knowing your screen resolution, it’s difficult to determine how much VRAM you are using. You can use MSI Afterburner to look at the amount of VRAM used, and if you are using it all up or not.
I run everything maxed out at 1440P on a 8 GB RTX 3080, and while all the VRAM is used up I don’t experience any hitching to speak off.
Because the high resolution textures are included and down scaled when using lower screen resolution.
I run at 1440p when it’s hitching.
Could be CPU bound, or your video card is throttling. Hard to say without seeing the stats from Afterburner.
