Uh guys...the runeword design

I’ll give the system a try on the PTR, but my initial reaction…

I am admittedly happy that runewords are going to come to the game, but I’m not super sure about the form in which they are taking. It seems like an overthought design that’s needlessly complex.

You had a KILLER system in Diablo 2, why not just implement it exactly as such in Diablo 4? The exact same. You don’t have to re-invent EVERY single concept in a sequel.

Or if you don’t want to just give us a new item via runeword that trump everything, expand maximum sockets to Diablo 2 numbers. 6 sockets on armor. 3 sockets on helmets, etc. Inserting a runeword into ANY item adds a ridiculous build or game breaking power to that item.

Why are you being so safe? Why can’t we equip more than two runewords? Why can’t we use the same rune twice? Why only two socket items?

I know you tried to give a little cheeky nod to D2 players with this in the Campfire, and show off the “Teleport” ability that replaces Evade. That’s NOT the same as giving a non-Sorceress Teleport, which completely opens up the power of that character like never seen before you got Enigma.

I’ll give it a try, but I’m concerned about why Blizzard loves to take things and reinvent them, when they already excellent in existing form

cuz it’s impossible with D4/D3 core system which strongly based on borrowed powers(sets in D3 aspects in D4).

That’s basically all. They have nothing in common with runewords in D2 except it’s name.

i agree im a little unsure too, yet im happy this system makes its way into d4.

i dont think the old runeword system would translate too well into d4. the itemization is vastly different.

you can use up to 3 runewords, as helmets gain another socket.

Not interesting in it at all.
And to hear they are just ripping off abilities from other classes in this systems… Kinda sad really considering the original Runeword system.

Everyone keeps labeling them as runewords, these are plain ol runes that seem eh, there has been no mention or showcase of a runeword yet.

Exactly. These are just cheap gimmicks.

But they are runes with words on them…

I love d2 but runewords is not a killer system in that game hunting and trading for high runes was and still is a pain

In its time yes lots of fun but it’s showing its age now

Unpopular opinion

yea, id say it holds a big nostalgic value for sure, but a 1:1 copy definitely wouldnt do good for d4.

It was opposite for me, the excitement I got when I found my first zod I still remember to this day lol, I don’t have any memory of d4 like that. But yea the rarity thing seems to be a small niche now days, most people want to get it in a week or so, that’s even to long for some

if the good runes are actually rare then im cool. If everything is “free” as in you will find anything you could want in a single play session then whats the point, then it will become just another formality like everything else in the game.

D4 NNEEDS excitment to loot. It needs RARE stuff that people might not even find during a season. Only that kind of rarity can make your heart pump and skip a beat whenever you find it.

Because this game was made by babies for babies. You will never get anything in d4 that requires serious thought or needing to ask others for help. It needs to be plug and play for dad gamers with 5 picoseconds of playtime per year because they have 15 orphanages to run, 16 wives and 25 full time jobs working 35 hours a day.

PTR patch notes says " A maximum of 2 Runewords can be equipped (4 Runes total)."

oh? i must have skipped it. thanks!

I am curious to see how much ruinwords versus gems will impact builds.

i mean, i assume most people will probably say “runes are the way!” but lets not forget you sacrifice 200 mainstat if you dont use gems in your armor.

I guess itll really boil down to the build you play.

what i was missing a bit were new options for jewelry really. armor, and res cap quite easily. skulls and gems dont provide a lot for us anymore (if anything at all)

You mean your saving max life nobody runs anything other then rubys

errrrr. i actually use mainstat. its a flat damage increase and i dont need any extra health. quite some builds actually do for that matter.

Yeah that is a problem.

I like the concept behind this rune system. Way better than D2 runewords.
But it is too simplified. Not enough customization, not enough choice.

Up to 4 sockets for a runeword would be better.

From what I understand they won’t be that rare, since you need 10 of them to create an uber, I believe the rarity will be the same as a Stygian stone. Which is bad, it could be extremely rare, like the initial ubers.
