Treasure Goblin + Death Pulse = one shot bug? (Hardcore)

I had 14k+ HP and probably about 60-70% of my fortify, as well as a huge amount of armor (80+% reduced damage). Died at level 97 to a 97 goblin’s Death Pulse.

Here’s the clip of it happening. It said I killed myself. (Wahmbulance slain by Wahmbulance). Hall of Heroes says ‘unknown’.

Unless Death Pulse scales stupidly with the killing blow taken, then I can’t see how this isn’t a bug. Normally I can take 4-5 Death Pulses and it only gets me down to half or so.

Goblin was slain with a 544k overpower crit and a 277k overpower crit at the same time by a pulverize druid.

EDIT:

Guys, we did it!

My video made it into an IGN article (shoutout to the one who found it here!) and the issue was also put on Kotaku’s radar, who also wrote an article.

From Kotaku’s article: "Update 06/30/2023 4:15 p.m. ET: Blizzard confirmed to Kotaku that this is caused by a bug: “This is a known issue that will be addressed in a future patch coming before the start of Season 1.”

I’m glad Blizzard is addressing things, even if it wasn’t directly with us here. Big props to the Diablo 4 team, I have very, very high hopes for this game if this continues. Ya’ll are kings and queens.

Update: After browsing more and more topics on this issue, I’m convinced this is a bug with druids, the treasure goblin and death pulse combined. I’m not sure about others, but I was wearing the unique Insatiable Fury for werebears.

I haven’t seen anyone claim this happen to other classes, they’re either druid or don’t mention their class. (and might be a HC specific bug too).

It is not just druid. I just lost my 76 necro due to this. I can’t believe it. I could really cry 86 hours lost because of a bug… I am a casual player and I spent weeks on this character… I can accept dying when I am doing something wrong but come on… Also it looks like this is a known issue for a couple of days now why doesn’t it get fixed?

Thanks for the info! It was just an idea based on what I was seeing on the forums so far. But yeah, I lost my 97 and it’s rough to lose it to a bug. 150h gone. It’s hard to imagine this isn’t a bug when a single Death Pulse never even did a quarter of my HP before.

tl;dr: It can happen to (any?) class, in nightmare dungeons with death pulse from a treasure goblin. Strange one hit KO’s going on (in HC only?)

It must be a bug I survived a group of death pulses easily and the goblin was alone when I killed it. I was at full hp and almost fully fortified, nothing can damage that much on this level.
The sad thing is that I can find alnost a week old report about this and I get that it cannot be fixed immediately but they should create a warning or something in game…

Yup. My experience was the same. 4-5 death pulses would only chunk me to half. But one from a goblin? One shot. It’d be nice if they confirmed if this were a bug… as well as warn people.

It’s not a druid problem. Check my previous message with clip, my friend died as necro as well. What about the unique Insatiable Fury - I didn’t have it in my build if it matters.

I thought it might have something to do with druid killing the goblin. But that isn’t the case and I was just mentioning druid stuff I had in case it was the cause of it.

Basically it’s not restricted to a class afaik. It’s just Treasure Goblins with Death Pulse. As well as HC only, potentially.

The sad thing is that you can’t predict it. You are playing carefully and safe and then died by some magic 1 shot.
Too much time is required to test all these strange things on hardcore. Maybe Blizzard will fix it, but it will not return our heroes. Looks like it’s time to avoid death pulse nm dungeons.

I think that blizz could have some solution for these cases, like saving the last combat log for HC deaths… I don’t think any1 could fake that and it would prove these kind of issues.
I mean it is ok that you agree they won’t resurrect any character but these are bugs… it’s not even a connection issue/lagg which still sucks but happens…
What if there were a bug that when you sell specific item you die, would it be acceptable as well?
Also it is so frustrating that noone is responding on these threads… a “sorry for what happened we are taking a look” would be cool at least it would show that they care and want to prevent cases like this…

Update: Death Pulse testing.

I did some more testing with Death Pulse on SC with my 64/65 Rogue. Most single Death pulses seemed to hit me for 400-800 range (4k max hp). Two Death Pulses were about 1400 when I tried that, which lines up with the range I saw.

Going off the theory that Death Pulse scales off Max HP of an enemy, I killed the boss from range (so the Death Pulse wouldn’t spawn in the bubble) and stepped into the Death Pulse. It hit me for about 700~, which falls in line with what I was seeing from other Death Pulses from other enemies (I tried all kinds of enemies with different HP as well, trees, fallen, spiders, fallen overseer (big ones).

Also it seemed like my 240 HP regen when out of combat may have ticked a few times even after getting hit by a Death Pulse, which may have resulted in seeing what looked like a 400-600 hit, when in reality it was closer to the 700’s~ I was seeing.

My conclusion/tldr: This is 100% a bug. Before I was 99% sure, on the off chance that the tooltip for Death Pulse was wrong/neglected to mention it scaled off the enemies max HP, but that’s proven wrong after sitting in the Death Pulse of a boss.

Don’t waste any more time on this IMO, you called out already…
Hopefully they took a notice…

I find it fun to experiment on SC with it, haha.

It is fixed in 1.0.4.

  • Fixed an issue where Treasure Goblins slain in a Nightmare Dungeon with the Death Pulse Affix would deal significantly more damage than intended with its post-death explosion.

“Significantly more damage” :stuck_out_tongue:
