Transferring game to external ssd drive

can someone explain how to move game files to an external ssd drive and how to make game open from there

First make sure the external SSD is big enough to hold all the Diablo 4 files. These are the min requirements for the game.

Storage: SSD with 90 GB available space.

Copy the Diablo 4 directory to the external drive. Just copy then paste.

  • C:\Program Files (x86)
  • Scroll down to Diablo IV and copy that whole folder. It is BIG and will take a while. So will the pasting.

In the Battlenet Desktop Launcher go to

  • Settings > Game Settings > Diablo 4 > and change the install location from the default C drive to the one you put it on.

No need to un install, re-install, or do anything fancy. Just copy the files over and tell the launcher to use that location.

Edit - keep in mind that playing on an external drive is not technically supported or recommended, as the Blizzard post said. You can try it of course and it may be an improvement. It can’t hurt anyway.

Just to add:

Make sure you are using a blue USB port (version 3 and higher) or USB C connection if available for speed. A white port doesn’t go fast enough to make using an external SSD worthwhile.

And one more note: Make sure the external is using the correct format (NTFS) and not the default FAT32 for additional storage devices.

you still need to uninstall the old files after or they just sit there wasting space i know cuz i moved WoW from my harddirve to my external SSD and it was a nightmare to start with but also had to remove those old files cuz they held onto that space on the harddrive

Depends. Mostly on whether or not that space is needed for something else.

I occasionally back up a game install folder as a precaution, often before a large patch drops.

Either to another drive or an external. I can also use the external to transfer a copy of the game to another system so that I don’t have to download it twice.

Or have a dedicated high speed external drive to play the game from multiple systems, simply by taking it with you and using it at whatever machine you have at that moment.

However, in doing that you have to keep in mind a few things:

  • Never run the battlenet app while copying or pasting a game folder.
  • Never run the battlenet app while connecting or disconnecting a drive with active games directed to it.

You WILL corrupt your game install if you don’t adhere to those things. And if you have a twitchy connection on your external (like a bad or loose USB) that will cause the same result. Your installation can be corrupted.

And to top it all off, installations can get funky after a year of use and updates. The CASC file system they use inside the files can get fragmented. The scan/repair is supposed to fix this, but often its way better to remove the entire game folder and re-download. This will fix any fragmentation and put the files into contiguous order again. Usually this is noticed when the game actively starts to slow down, have issues, load times increase, etc.
