Too early to PANIC?

The power creep in the PTR was insane. It was so bad that it made pretty much all the content that was not the Pit trivial and even the Pit could not slow down the top builds (2 or 3 each in each class).

The PC Gamer article mentioned that the Devs want every class to be able to do billions in damage. Why?

I have seen power creep destroy several of my favorite games in the past. I hope D4 is not just going to be another one of those. I am waiting anxiously for the stream and the patch notes.

Feeling powerful is the goal of all ARPGs.

Just playing devils advocate here. What games in particular did you play, that were destroyed by power creep? Also was it only destroyed for you, or did the player base also fall off? Would love to see examples of this. Links would be appreciated for sources too.

Also pertaining to your title, if history is anything to go off of (not just these forums), it’s never too early to panic.

i think thats something many people who arent familiar with arpgs came up with.

of course, its wanted to feel how a character becomes stronger, that doesnt mean one should be able to clear stuff easily. Worst argument is: “i payed for this, i should be able to do every content”.

@OP, id wait, the patch notes are yet to be seen. according to the ptr, yea, there are some OP things going on, which i hope get tuned down. i wouldnt trust these articles btw, so far, i didnt hear anything of the likes in campfire chats.

Of course the leveling content will be trivial with endgame progression. If you couldn’t tell the difference in power level, what reason would you have to do it?

Some call it Power-Fantasy, others call it Power-Creep-Fantasy.

It’s okay to feel powerful. The devs are under no dillusion that there are a ton of games out there at the moment and if people stick around a season and play 1, 2, 3 or even 4 ‘powerful’ characters… That’s okay… People should have fun and move-on, then come back in another Season.

Just wait until they nerf everything to fit in seasonal mechanics for Season 5.

you are saying that as if nerfs were something bad boy D:

Season 4 is going to be a sort of test realm with how massive it is. Season 4 is just going to be an enjoy your totally broken stuff that will be found. Season 5 we will see massive nerfs. So its kinda just like normal.

I think you should head over to pcgamer and read the article on the rule of cool.

If anything, it might be too late to panic.

More like it will se some small nerfs, and then another set of massive buffs :frowning:

Yes, too early to panic, but not too early to be concerned.

What concerns me to the most is why they need more than 200 levels of the Pit? If they cannot balance the end game experience inside 200 stages, then something is terribly wrong with the capability of the balance team.

I have also never understood why we need to be hitting for Billions of damage - seems stupid to me but there must be elements at play I don’t really understand here…

As for the power fantasy, that is the RPG thing - you want to get to the end and feel godlike. However, that doesn’t mean you should be able to trivialize level 200 Uber bosses in the blink of an eye.

I’m really bothered by this. Game was already so easy and most content so trivial it was near pointless - you just run around and watch everything die as soon as it comes in sight. And now it sounds like it’s going to get dialed up to 11. So much for the original vision of the game having relevant combat sigh.

Wait, they had a vision for the game? Gonna need a source on this.

It’s what ARPG are, as much as I get your point that I would like an “undoable” challenge that comes with.
The Pit might be the answer :slightly_smiling_face:

I did play to a freenium once, to see how it’s like, on the server there was a guy who putted so much money on the game that his character could kill all players and monsters with a single hit. The game still survived from this

Yep. Agreed. It sucks. Ah well, whenever it gets to a D3 or Torchlight zoom-zoom gameplay then that will be the end of my D4 gaming.

Pinnacle goal - yes. Achievable early on in your progression with all content trivialized basically by 75? Not so much. The problem with D4 is that you start one-shotting stuff early on and dealing disproportionate damage making progression feel kind of meaningless.

It is like playing Skyrim as a Sneak Archer and you are straight up one-shotting Dragons and stuff like 30 minutes into the game. You are like “Uh, do I really need to do anything anymore?”

I think you’re reading a little too much into that article. There’s no direct quote in the article stating that is what Blizzard wants, so it can only be counted as opinion from the author.
