This is one area i think need some tweaking.
I found the auto feature and lack of ability to weapon swap very frustrating at first, eventually got used to it, but overall don’t like it.
I want to be able to control my weapon swapping outside of equipping a skill.
Basically take all this automated play out and half my issues are solved lol.
I think it is fantastic, and manual swapping is tedious. You need it for more power but swapping itself is not fun. Using better gear for particular situation is fun. Blizzard just made it better. If you add on top of it option to decide which skill uses which weapon (like barbs can now) -it is overall just great.
Fair take, and i am glad u enjoy it as it is,no problem with that.I did find it annoying though as i wanted to use a skill that uses for example slashing weapon which can be a 2H or 1H weapon it auto selected the 2H rare because it had higher power however i wanted it to use the 1H weapon because it has the lower power but was legendary bonus. So i was forced to unequip the 2H so the game would not use it with my build.
This was for me just as tedious and for me did not feel better but restricting.
easy fix was just allow me to select which slashing weapon to use with the skill so i can keep the 2H sword in my weapon slot and apply it or not to other skills in my build.
They do that than i can see it being better i guess.
I saw a video showing that you can select which weapon is used for each skill, it was an actual option in game.
Here let me help you, since you dont know how to play the game yet. Open your Abilities tab, in the Skill Tree hover over any of the unlocked skills and press the middle mouse button. This will cycle thru your weapon options for what skill to use.
No weapon swapping, just hot swapping the weapon for the skill in the Abilities tab. This is way better and accomplishes the same thing.

Just like you noticed - game prioritized higher DPS weapon. But you can change which type of weapon is selected for each equipped skill, as long as skill allows such type of weapon to be used.
As ciller wrote - hovering mouse over skill (when no skill tree/selection menu is open) and clicking middle mouse button allows you quickly to change game’s default, dps oriented selection, for any other viable option of your choosing.
Help me understand, whats really the point if the game autoprioritizes the highest dps weapon?
Because a specific weapon has a specific ability you want for a specific skill and it isn’t the highest DPS weapon. Would be my guess.
For on hit procs associated with your weapon, or other mechanics besides dps associated with your weapon.
By default the game selects the highest weapon damage for the job, but sometimes you don’t want that. If you are using a legendary or skill that only activates after you swap weapons X amount of times then you’d want to manually select different weapons for your abilities. But some abilities can only be used by certain weapons so there are cases where you don’t need to manually select them and cases where you do.
The default system is in place so the average player won’t struggle with weapon choice but having the ability to choose is so, so good for advanced players.
Not complaining so no need to rub in the salt, I was giving feedback from my beta experience nothing in the game nothing i tried worked, so i can only comment on my experience.

Aside from the part where you can choose the weapon for each skill as others mentioned, I just wanted to make sure you understand that you get all the bonuses from all your weapons, all the time.
Its not like you keep a 2nd weapon set with buffs to your shout skills that you switch to before using your shouts. You just have those bonuses all the time.
Personally I grew to really like it and how it gave me even more gearing up options and depth to legendary aspect combinations.
Not Against the arsenal system,I like the fluidness it brings to combat,Hence why i said tweaking.
Glad to hear middle mouse seems to fix my issues i had with it. Sucks i couldn’t figure it out at the time.
So it was feeling like it was taking weapon choice away from me and i wasn’t a fan of that, i found a work around as I said so it was not a issue for beta after that.
Anyways if you think it’s perfect great no problem, my experience it wasn’t and could use a tweak, not a rework not complaining about it being different.
Just talking about it so it can ne addressed if needed or i can be informed about controls that seemed to pass me by in the beta game.
Sounds like it doesn’t need to be addressed. Sounds like you just needed to figure out how it works. Maybe you should’ve tried asking?
okay i see so what you mean so it auto selects for the bigger dps but will apply the legendary that is affixed to it because they are both slashing weapons which are needed for “x” skill.
All I’m saying is that all the affix bonuses on all your weapons are active all the time. So if your 2h hammer has bonus damage to close enemies, bonus to core skills, etc… all your attacks will get those bonuses whether they use your 2h hammer or not. (Including legendary aspects)
I have an affinity for rolling the mouse wheel for swapping weapons, I blame ESO for that. I sort of like having to swap weapons on the fly myself, it adds a bit to the mastering part. But it’s also not something I’d make a fuss over if it’s there or not.
Honestly, I had no clue about the middle mouse button to change that too. I assumed it was related to the lvl 15 Barbarian stuff that we could not do in the beta. That’s something Blizzard needs to show players.
Cool please keep leaving your thoughts and leave the personal judgements out.
Not a complaint thread.
I want the game to be the best i can and offering thought’s on my beta experience, feel free to leave your own with out being rude about it.
Not saying i am right and i don’t care if they change it or not at all.
Just offering up my play time thoughts with it and the where it made me feel like i couldn’t use the weapon i wanted for my skill because i would hover over and just had auto with weapon icon underneath, and for me this felt a little off.
We have conversation about it doesn’t always by default mean i hate the game or think its dumb, I really enjoy d4 and even ppl that play wayy wayy more d3 than i ever did have a laundry list of issues for d4 and i see nothing wrong with talking about how the games system felt in my hands at the time.
Yeah, it was somewhat difficult to play with without googling it. I like the feature the way it works during gameplay, but I think the selection of which weapons are default, etc., should be a bit more obvious/easy to setup/swap without going a handful of levels deep into a skill tree or whatever.
