If you activate the pit sometimes the animation of the artifice will close covering the portal and keeping you from entering. You have to open another portal to get the artifice to open again

The same happened to me. The problem is that the portal is activated BEHIND the pedestal, you cannot click on it. No matter the angle you try, you cannot click on it. The only solution to that is to log off and on again.
