The loop of messy game design. (enemies)

D4 is one of the best example of what happens if you got no clear vision where you wanna go.

D4 started relatively unspectacular. And I do not mean this negativ. It was relatively balanced in gameplay.

Then they nerved the mobs for whatever reason, v probably cause people complained about scaling.

After the nerv of the mobs they raised the density. Sure why not if the enemies are weak why not raise density.

Oh suddenly cc became a problem. Sure when you just raise density enemies will bombard you with all kinds of cc from the sheer masses that spawn.

Now we nerv the cc as well so people stop complaining about stun locks.

Slowly a pattern is shining through. Every time blizz reacts to complaining people the game changes and stuff breaks.

At this point the game changed from a resonable balance to a game that throws a bazillion worthless trash mobs at you where you can cookie cut through.

It does not stop here. No since Everything is a cookie clicker the only solution is once again scaling. Albeit a terrible solution but a solution.

Now we are in s5. Internal hordes are here and show the ugly outcome of this odyssey.

The screen gets filled with abaillion worthless Enemies. Up to that point where you scale wen so much that even a small fireball oneshot a high equipped beefy char. Combined with the fact that the screen is non-stop littered with trash mobs you can barely even tell what just killed you.

So you run around a bit with bazillion worthless enemies you can kill and hope that nothing touches you.

Can we get some meaningful gameplay? Maybe?

Not only that they dont have vision where they are heading, they also continually present slopy and lazy work.

They had to nerf mobs dmg cuz RESISTENCES DIDNT WORK for 2 seasons
They had to nerf CC cuz meele builds needed to 100% uptime on UNSTOPABLE or they couldnt even play the game
They are nerfing the difficulty of everything and just adding HP pool to mobs and introducing 1 SHOT MECHANICS cuz they cant balance builds relative to each other
Builds are continually just destroyed completly instead of being tuned down properly every season, which only adds to this style of few Meta builds dominating every season doing 100x DMG of others…

Yes the class balance is another page in the book of messy game design worth to have his own thread.

In short the nonsensical this and that does% more dmg is the quintessence of the mess.

As soon as you have stats like
Skill A does 100% more dmg

It automatically renders

Skill BCDE pointless. Everything is streamlined with only a few creative freedoms.

Actually they had a vision and everyone hated their vision so they had to completely redo the game cause everyone hated it to say they didn’t have a vision is a little rude

Name an arpg that isn’t messy in the beginning……don’t say PoE I was there

They could have built the most polished product on earth…but the moment millions of ppl start poking and prodding your game in a million different way can you truly start the monumental task of balancing a system like this

So you make changes see if ppl like it or not and evolve the game with its community until they hit the right frequency

That takes time and lots of money

This made me smile. I was there to and OH BOY was it something else. They’ve all pretty much seen their share of problems.

Yeah because these game are huge now and damn hard to make

I mean last Epoch which I had a heaps of fun playing was in early access for ages and it’s launch was a disaster

In old days these games were made with sprites :joy: and still had problems

Hordes are boring
NMD’s are boring
Pit is kinda cool and fun
Ladder bosses are cool and fun
Leaderboard is interesting

And yeah it is a bit all over the place. Imo NMD’s are actually not even interesting or fun much after you get to 100 and only reason to go back is to level glyphs.

Is it that it’s boring or that we are forced to do them for certain things like mats/glyphs etc

If blizzard opens up the design so we can lvl glyphs in pits/hordes/legions so we can choose our own way to have fun

Would that be better? Because sometimes it feels like a chore which makes things boring in the end

They are trying to appeal to the masses and for what it’s worth they actually aren’t doing a terrible job.

Yes the game is easy, but as it turns out people seem to want to play games that are easy. Diablo 4, for better or worse, is actually bringing new people into the genre. Are other ARPG’s better? That’s also a preference, but what we have here grows the player base of these kinds of games. It can only be good for the long term health of the genre.

I have no idea but I want it betterer

I do not think this is the case.

Yes there definatly is a crowd for mindless brain afk games but I have my doubts this crowd is bigger then the crowd of people who want some form of challenge.

There is an entire genre defined by difficulty and millions of fans enjoy it.

I also don’t know if d4 should speak to the same crowd as D:I. They already have a diablo game they can milk.
