The Ancestral item system needs to change in 2.0

Playing Torment is boring because all the drops are useless. Basically, by the time you get to Torment in the PTR, all your gear becomes useless, and all the gear in the game becomes useless. If you do not have an ancestral item then it is useless. This is terrible. Only Ancestral items can be tempered twice and only ancestry items can be masterworked past rank 4. The problem is that when you get to Torment, ancestral items do not drop. I grind the game for hours and do numerous NMDs without seeing a single ancestral item. When we are in torment, we do not want to see any item drop that isn’t ancestral, we only want ancestral items and we want more of them to drop. Everything that drops in the PTR in the endgame is profoundly useless. The solution is to not have ancestral items in the game period. Every item should have two tempers and a chance (not a guaranteed chance) at having a greater affix. Everything should have the ability to be masterworked up to 12. Everything that drops in torment should be max item power. Ancestral items should not exist. Everything that drops in the endgame should be endgame-viable. The current item system is not fun. If Blizzard plans on reducing the drop rates for items, that’s fine, but make everything that drops endgame viable.

I was running Torment 3 on my rogue. Out of several runs (Don’t remember how many) I got one Ancestral with the worst stats ever lol. What suprised me was, it was not really any better stat wise then the ilvl 750 i had on.

Don’t feel alone, at leats, you found ONE ancestral. How are we supposed to optimize our builds with the correct gear if we can’t even find the gear to begin with?

I also wanted to make a post on this. In Season 5, I feel like I know exactly what the progression is for getting good GA gear. Despite the fact that it feels like Torment Bosses is the only good way to farm good GA gear, at least it’s clear and when Torment Bosses drop gear, they drop A LOT of loot, which feels good. I cannot identify doing something in Torment I or Torment II right now that feels good for farming Ancestral gear, which has become SO IMPORTANT not only because of the GA change but mainly because of the tempering limitation on 750 gear. Despite having a solid build right now for pushing Torment III, I still have yet to be able to adequately farm enough boss mats to run the (pretty pathetic) bosses, which barely drop anything at all, in order to get the necessary uniques/mythics I need to keep pushing higher.

TLDR: The progression from Lvl 1 to Lvl 60, up to ipower 750 was decent, and very little complaints from me. But there is a HUGE dropoff right after when it comes to barely getting Ancestral gear, let alone grinding enough masterworking materials to upgrade them. I do want Torment IV to be VERY HARD to get to and do well in, but that shouldn’t impact the HIGH we get from getting good gear that makes the build feel powerful.

In fact, in torment 4 1GA item should be the default drop. Anything different of this is useless…

You forget. They don’t want you to find the gear you want. Not good business practice.

I agree with this post, and for me it is incomprehensible that the developers would even think of having another item level power gap (750-800) based on drops because I had the impression that they saw this as a problem in the past.

If you remember, we had the situation in Season 2 where the maximum item level was only guaranteed by Duriel and world bosses, which made all other content feel like a waste of time. Especially when it comes to weapons, where max item level counts so much for base damage.
Fortunately, the developers have moved away from this.

On the PTR we have exactly the same problem again, only worse. The increase in power makes most of your non-ancient finds, unique or not, almost worthless. Not only because of the weapons, but also because of the higher max stats for every affix at ilvl 800. It is quite big in some cases:

There has been talk by the devs about looking into white / blue items in order to make them less useless. What baffles here is that with this change they have basically trashed another item category (non-ancient legendaries).

If you ask me then I suggest to move Diablo 4 far away from item levels as the main power indicator, because this design always runs the risk of making content (items, leveling, various activities) redundant.

I think the ancestral drop rate is fine. GG items should be a chase, not a reward, chars should not be OP, player will need skill. This is where Diablo is heading and I like it!

no amount of skill makes taking forever to kill things interesting or good.

in an arpg the characters should absolutely be op.

I mean, imagine having a good system that has only been here for a couple of months; players coming back and having more fun than ever… And now it is time to, not even change, but actually going back to a bad state of the game, where you had to go to YouTube to watch a build performing well because people know how rare the piece they’ve got is that they can make a YouTube channel ‘‘monetizable’’ with that video.

You’re going to be massively disappointed. There is exactly zero chance it is going live like this

Nope. And another nope to get past 20 characters.

Oh, yes? Do you even play hardcore for me to actually care about what you just said? :joy:

I know it is not, but I like it. Maybe they will buff it just a little bit. Hey, no wonder booster NPC did not provide in the cashes some ancestrals. That’s what they want to test. The scaling, the difficulty progression, etc. But I guess you did not get it.

Ah ya can’t make a reply without insulting someone eh? You almost said something intelligent maybe even helpful there and then you took it all back. There’s a reason so many people have you on ignore

I don’t know… I get ancestral on average like 1:90 items. Do you even remember D2 where the ones asking why they don’t find anything good got a question like “Excuse me, how many hundred times did you kill the boss today?” If the answer is 0, you should NOT have anything good. That’s it. People have to get it. Enough with the power creep, enough with the immortal builds, enough with the 1-shotters, enough with the crap! This game is finally getting there and when they add Diablo in it, it will finally also be released and I may even review it. :smirk:

Yep.
The current design and drop rate on Ancestrals is very frustrating.
Even End game bosses and World Bosses don’t drop Ancestrals.

I dont wan tot spend 2 months trying to gear up 1 character with Ancestral items with the correct affixes. This ridiculous grind will make day after day of farming items feel like walking in place instead of having any meaningful progress.

Out of ~200 end game bosses I killed I got only TWO Ancestral uniques and ONE mythic.
None of which were what I was looking for.
Overall I probably got around a dozen Ancestrals across all characters I tried and ZERO had 2 out of 3 affixes. For me that was 4 days basically wasted.

Doesn’t matter how fun the new class is, if I get to max level and it takes a week to upgrade a single item to Ancestral I don’t see myself playing past the seasonal rewards. I imagine many others won’t either.

If you want to make players keep playing longer during seasons give us entertaining content, don’t put atrocious grinds for every single basic thing we need.

No. it is not. People keep forgetting about infernal hordes and the guaranteed GA chests…

I see you everywhere in this topic and already got a few posts of you being really creepy with others just because they want the drop rate to go up.
I will take my time and report every single of those comments. I am sure there is material enough to get you banned from forums for a bit at least.

Sure. Ban me, because you don’t agree with me. You are so pathetic. Get a life, noob
