OP is onto something.
Remove limit.
Flat 20% it bricks… No scaling chance, come on lol. Each attempt has a 20% chance to brick.
Or just put the temper limit to 10. if you cant get it in 10 tries then fate has deemed you unworthy
Meet you in the middle. Up the temper limit to 7.
Burn 1 temper to guarantee a different affix (i’m also ok with it removing it from the list of affixes going forward)
Burn 2 to re-roll the current one
If you never see the affixes you wanted after 7 rolls, then you are indeed unworthy.
So instead of bricking an item it 50% out right deleted. I’m sure the community wouldn’t be upset with this at all. ![]()

Each Temper attempt comes with a 20% chance to have one of your paragon boards permanently deleted. Let’s do this.
I would like if you could sacrifice a fully tempered item with 0 tempers left to add +1 chance to an untempered item. This means if you get some god GA drop you could farm mats to full temper tons of items and just feed it up (but you have to do this before you start tempering it).
It would be a lot of clicking though.
You could still get really unlucky but you could at least hedge your bets a bit.
Add 1% chance the item becomes a bigmac with large fries.
Reset temper rolls button with the same materials plus gold.
Make an “Forgers Apprentice” where you hand him an item with no Tempering left, and a normal Unique. He spits back out your original item with 5 tempering changes reinstated.
It’s not game destroying mechanic, you’ll get plenty of loot right back. And I’m sure Treasure Goblins will appreciate your sacrifice and reward you with plenty of loot ![]()
Regardless, maybe current tempering system is better after all, at least you get to keep your item even if 1 of the affixes is not what you want.
Haha I onced played an arpg like that where when you “upgraded” an item there were 3 things that could happen:
That was soul crushing but fun non the less. Wouldnt want to go back to that.

Just balance the recipe, make sure every single one has only 3 available modifiers on it, not 3~7.
