Tempering Items

Tempering mechanics and the high chance of bricking items is a good reason to quit the game. Discuss.

Mayo on grilled cheese sandwiches made with prosciutto is a good reason to have tomato soup on a cold day.

Tempering is fine, I don’t mind tempering. If I Brick something I go play the game to get the same Item I bricked, I might find a better version.

Super Happy Fun Time.

Discussed.

Tempering is fine. Temper tantrums are not.

I roll suboptimally maybe 1-2 items a season. I get what I want 95% of the time. Sure sometimes I will gamble for a better role.

The only people it really impacts are those who swipe there credit cards.

I’ve bricked maybe two items over the past two seasons.

Now, what I really believe is going on is people are getting the affixes they need, decent rolls even, but getting greedy and going for max resulting in a brick and then blaming the system not themselves.

Tempering is far from fine. When the team is driven to create an item that will reset the temperings, and then allow players to only use said refresh once per item, that’s just poor design.

Personally I somewhat agree with this. I’ve always thought the temper reset scrolls should be unlimited uses but should also be insanely rare drops. That way you have to weigh is it worth a stash slot in hopes that I can eventually reset this item again. Like if it’s that “perfect for my build 3ga two handed mace” or something.

However seriously, the system in its current state is not that bad. Not nearly as bad as people try to make it out to be.

I agree the scrolls were a mistake.

It’s an annoying mechanic and I expect it to be fixed for good eventually, but for now all one can do is keep complaining about it. I know that it’s convinced my friends to play less as a result and it irritates me quite a bit as well, but it hasn’t been enough to prevent me from playing outright, just makes me less interested in grinding. :v:

lol. yea. super duper mega high chance of bricking lmao.

Nope.

and nope Mr Sweaty.(“Adding scrolls was a mistake.” Can you try to be less of an edgelord for once?)

Keep Current Affix and it will be fine.
This is what’s missing from the very beginning.
Blind gambling and zero player agency.
Yes yes, incoming rebuttal with some scripted edgy remark about ez handout something or other. : :umbrella: sweat umbrella engaged.

Brilliant deduction Sherlock.
While this is certainly the case sometimes, as I’m sure we’ve all been there and done it.
It’s just as easy to say - those who claim to have 90-95+% success rates are simply boastful liars.
Easy to be hyperbolic right?

Now let’s examine 5 bricked Amulets in 5 minutes.
Set Necro on back burner.
Made Barb for speedfarm.
Funneled all Amulet Caches to Necro and all Barter Caches that could contain Amulets.
Ended up with 6.
3 did not get ONE SINGLE Aspect I wanted + scroll.
2 got ONE Aspect I wanted + scroll.
6th got both - mind you both rolled on the 2 remaining rolls + scroll.
Luckily I saved the best Amulet for last.

2 Tempering attempts from 6 bricked Amulets in 5 minutes.
Luck came through at the last minute.

It happens.
It’s not super frequent but it DOES happen.

Now as far as …sigh why does everyone have to be so insulting and “them they those” all the time?
As far as “Those greedy” players who want a better roll…
Can you blame them?
Get minimum rolls on something and then watch 10+ rolls get burned?

It’s lacking what I said above -
Like Enchanting: KEEP CURRENT ROLL/AFFIX
Then that item you wre lucky enough to fine or hard farmed many hours for could actually be perfected safely (barring bad RNG) with remaining Tempers.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this and it’s the singular core flaw in the design.(Well aside from it not even being crafting to begin with)

I hate this systém. I Broked3 times 3GA polearm in row . You want push more PiTS ,but you destroying And destroying again.sometimes Is anoying . There has to be upgrade for this. Really want choose what type of dmg And ONLY think what gonna matter IT Can be roll . But this Is grinding game ,not endgame . So they keep IT like that

Hopefully. The time for stuff to be made easier should over by now. We had way too much of that in the past.

Damn. Haven’t gotten a 2-h mace for my Druid that hasn’t bricked yet this season. Finally get a 2GA, first I’ve seen all season, finally going to replace this damned axe, and it bricks without chance for double cataclysm damage after 12 rerolls. And that’s one that only even has 3 options. What a total bummer…

Yeah I am running army of the dead right now when I should really be running soul rift because I couldn’t get the temper to roll soul rift in seven or whatever tries and it ended up on army of the dead.

I’m told army sucks but I don’t want to play with an affix that doesn’t mean anything. It feels really bad though because I haven’t found anything to replace it. I am literally waning on my enthusiasm to even continue playing the character, I logged in for about 10 minutes today, got some stuff that might potentially be a sidegrade, and I don’t even have all ancestrals yet. Am 125 paragon.

Trying to nail a temper and ending it on something that your build should legitimately not be using at all is balls. Straight balls. And before you ask, as soon as I roll something I can use, regardless of what that is, I keep it. Like, I keep +summon even though I want +mage, that kind of thing.

Anyway end of story. I had a lot more to say but I don’t actually want to stir garbage on the internet so I’ll keep it this brief.

This has literally nothing to do with difficulty. Same with almost anything anyone complains about in this game.

Arpg are about the loot hunt. So yea, if its easier to gear up - the game is easier. We arent playing elden ring here.

User experience will vary.
Your or others personal fortune doesn’t nullify nor negate another’s frustrating or terrible experience.

This forum might have some “complaining complainers” but boy it sure has some zero empathy, egotistical high and mighty’s.(I’m not directing that at you Ny).

It’s totally valid and understandable for Players to be peeved when they finally find a gg item after some hundred+ hours of farming and engages with a half-baked “crafting”(lul) system and Murphy’s Law kicks in and gives them a big fat NOPE and the middle finger with a moldy cherry on top.

Statements like: “Just go farm another one” are so patently ridiculous when it’s an amulet for example (yes, you got yours day 1 hour 1 and it was perfect congrats) and odds are they’ll never see another one outside of 3rd party trading or rmt which is a no go for many and rightly so) -another double whammy of atrociousness by-design.

I’ve already stated my issues with “luck” as of late but I’m not here complaining - just empathizing with fellow users with whom I share very similar experiences.
Eg. Over 2 WEEKS - so fixated on targeting class items & so long I literally FORGOT all about Mythics being in the loot pool - for real.
Hundreds of minor Lairs and over 100 D&A. Not one.
Fail central with Tributes.
No class uniques worth a damn.
No leggos of value or note.
By rights I should be making an angsty post.
I put in a lot of time and netted nothing.

For my own sanity, I play the game for fun or when bored.
I accept the system for what it is.
BUT when the core DESIGN is bad or lacking - ie. Tempering and not keeping an Affix or there’s intentional weighting - that’s when I get upset.
That’s when it feels like I’m being trolled and played.

Not having a key feature is doing much more harm than good and amidst a game rife with imbalances and bugs galore - you need as much goodwill as possible.
Something as simple as keeping a freaking Affix - aka Enchanting - is not gimme gimme insert hyperbole - it’s core 101 design.

As for bricking… I wish I’d recorded my 6 amulet fail-a-thon.
It seems some people think the system is 99% perfect and practically flawless - when it’s certainly not.

Also: How there can be SO MANY bugs and issues and imbalances in this game…
But then people think “Oh this or that system is working fine”.
Really? Are you Sure? Can you be sure? Can anyone say with certainty that anything is actually functioning optimally at this point?
Oh nevermind I forgot - some random Internet person posted some numbers and a story about allegedly doing something so many times…with zero evidence (I assure you it was all napkin math).
I’ll believe that tale if y’all buy the bridge I have for sale.

oh i said it a few times. While i personally dont think thats needed, its one of those little compromises i could see, and would be willing to take when it comes to that really. Tho id also think that id say that the scrolls should be removed in that scenario.

Dont get me wrong. I know bad luck streaks in rng related games too well. However, i also know how easy it is to hyperbole into ridiculouslness when it comes to these situations. God, i cursed when i got my idk, 7th melted heart of selig? I of course thought the game is trolling me hard - but after calming down, i remembered that this is exactly what rng can do to you at times.

Like that random guy here recently who “brocked 100s of items in s7”. Yea buddy, sure.

Im with you that the bugs are way too much currently, and of course we can never be absolutely certain. About that random person tho: hes not all that random, he actually used to be pretty active here, and wasnt really a person that “liked” diablo. Had tons of discussions with him lol. I mean, we rely on people doing such tests. Dont get me wrong, but i dont give a damn about single temper bad experiences. They just arent important in the grand scheme of things.

Of course that doesnt mean we can absolutely trust him, but, considering what he posted, and how he described what he did + his math makes it pretty likely that he indeed ran a rather big test, which deserves nothing but respect. It also fits my own personal experience.

I also had streaks of getting the same temper multiple times in a row, but im dead serious when i say that i effectively bricked like 2-6 items per season since tempering was released, just like many others. I dont think thats a number that should lead to players talking about “disappointment inducing systems”. Its just an rng system, and these of course can work for, or against your favor.

oh there are always 2 extremes, so yea, no offense taken dear. I think and hope that you know by now that im always up for a good and polite discussions. We all have our experiences and its good that we share them, even if it leads to disagreements :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

First problem of tempering is that you can not argue “Its all RNG” when the R part does not work. One of the significant issues with Tempering is that the game will lock onto an affix, one you do not want, and give that to you 4 out 7 tries, or 5 out of 7. When it happens a couple times in a season, you could say bad luck. When it happens 9 out of 10 times, that is not RNG. When it happens 99 out of 100 you can be pretty certain that the ‘random’ part just does not work.

A little of the frustration with Tempering would go away if it truly was random. As many have pointed out before, you can select a manual with 3 affixes and find that 7 tries is all fail because the game locked onto one 4 times. I have seen this with Masterworking as well when I get to level 4 it can select a certain affix. Reset and it will select that same affix. Rinse and repeat 8 times and you can see that one affix be select 5 of the times. That is not RNG, it is flawed coding.
