Tempering is awful

Having enjoyed the game since release, and most of the seasons, I have spent many an hour playing Diablo IV. Multiple capped characters, still no uber uniques, but I digress. Tempering sucks.

I know tempering doesn’t “brick” the item completely, because the affixes it had before hand are what made it desirable to equip in the first place, but adding useless affixes to the item is not fun in any capacity. I do not find enjoyment in the RNG, slot machine casino that I am about to interact with whenever I get a new piece.

Keep in mind, I’m not level capped, but I am in WT4, so I am trying to get gear to take on the new, harder in-game activities. I’ve tempered quite a bit of gear because it is rather cheap to do so. Out of the fifty, sixty or so pieces I’ve tempered, I’ve only ever gotten an affix I actually wanted twice.

That’s at least, at the most extreme, 300 rerolls and only two have been successful. Are those really supposed to be the odds? I’m not looking forward to adding these to items that have Greater Affixes.

The dopamine rush of finally getting good RNG at this point is not even a feel good moment. When those two tempers were finally successful, instead of a happy moment, it was a frustrated “about time.”

There is a good base mechanic in place here, but the RNG moments are too great. I understand the need to have us fishing for better gear all the time, that is the nature of the game after all, but I simply do not care about wanting to go into town to make the gear better, when it just makes half of it unusable.

Tempering in my opinion can brick an item, I’ve bricked many items.

i just bricked 4 amulets trying to get movement speed, i would rather tempering cost double even triple and we pick what gets tempered and its the range that is gambled and not the stat.

Tempering is implemented in such a trash form. Trash.
WHY would anyone over there think that the playerbase would feel good taking a piece of gear, tempering it 5 times, and getting dodge chance each time?
I have had 3x 3 greater affix pieces of gear drop with perfect main stats. All three have been bricked through this incredibly stupid tempering system.

On the PTR I first thought Tempering is fine, maybe a few more tries would be nice.
But after playing a lot and bricking some items, I always have a bad feeling when tempering. This should not happen in a game. Gaming is about havening fun!

The idea of only rolling the value sounds reasonable.

I am not here to trash on the current system. I would say I am okay-ish with the tempering as it is now. What I would suggest is to make it as in Last Epoch. Let people choose exactly which stat they want to place on the item, but keep the roll range RNG and remove the tempering re-rolls. You can still “brick” the item, but at least it will be better than 80% of the things you find.

Just the thought of bricking an item makes looting gear less fun. I don’t get any dopamine hits anymore when I think about the 500 million gold worth of items that I had to throw away.

Yup, same here. After bricking 15-20+ items (its probably more, ive lost count), Ive simply lost the desire to play the game cause good gear gets bricked more often than not. Its hard enough to get a piece of gear with good rolls on the stats you need, then it gets ruined by the tempering system. I just dont understand why Blizz always has to have a punitive element in the systems they create.

Agreed. Love the changes, but sitting there helpless as you brick item after item because you can’t roll one useful stat on it.

Every category should just have 3 stats. Whoever’s idea it was to put 4 into some categories just to screw players into playing longer is an idiot, it’s back firing and little things like that make me want to play A LOT less.

Tempering should be infinite and limited by the amount of materials we have. It is still hard enough to even get the right item and the get good rolls and then get good tempering rolls and the enchant the right affix.
Are you seeing the madness?
Losing 1.8b after buying an Amulet that I bricked afterwards was the nail in the coffin for me.

Ive ruined tons of great items, they should allow us to fight a hard pit boss or dungeon to allow us to unbrick an item or add 5 more rolls, Or heck even charge 10 million gold to unbrick them. Or better yet if you brick an item to unbrick it, it takes a quality loss so the rolls wont be as high on the next 5 attempts.

Implement something so we dont have to completely discard great items.

Yes, i am just at that point where realizing i can temper twice and hit my first instance where i ran out of rerolls. Didnt even notice there was a limit. Blown away by this.
So yeah, my best item i have has 1 tempered thats useless for my build.
This is a fun killer, and not sure how much i will continue into this season now.

I just had to scrap a 2 star piece of gear because the tempering didn’t go to what I needed! Has blizzard ever thought of having the Tempering, cycle through the affixes in the box we choose?! I HATE when an item keeps coming up the same god damn thing and wasting tempering tries… or make the tempering tries infinite like the “Enchant Item” at the Occultist. They need to re-work this BS… it’s absolutely infuriating!!!

I just want to say the tempering system is the most frustrating and stupid thing yo can find in a game…
Just increase the mats needed or add gold increasing value or other way we can reach the stats/rolls we want.
This stupid tempering will end to make me stop play the game.
If i found the person who had this stupid idea i will make him feel the frustration this can do to a player…

It’s an easy fix, they could fix it in a week if they just did this.

My suggestions:
1- There shouldn’t be any RNG attributed to which affix you get, only for the strength of the roll. Tempering is a limited ressource, it’s a miserable feeling to throw away an item because it fails to give you an essential affix.

2- Have an option for preselected affix for each gear, have a button to automatically temper any equipped item (that hasn’t been tempered yet) with it’s preset affix. This will allow people to quickly switch gear while leveling so we don’t have to spend hours rolling instead of leveling. This feature will not effect already tempered items so you won’t wast rolls on them.

3- Also, if you want to manually reroll on an item, you shouldn’t have to reselect the manual over and over. Just let us choose the affix and reroll it’s range and have it only choose the highest roll, again, rolls have a set limit so just give people what they want. There’s already plenty of RNG involved in getting gear, greater affixes being the main one, and we play seasons, so there’s no reason to make it so difficult to get ideal gear within one season. We don’t need another hamster wheel in the form of “bricking” items because of bad tempering. It’s a very, and I mean very unpleasant feeling and 2 of my friends have already quit over it after coming back for this season.

You’re totally right!
It’s their punitive element that I fail to understand.

This is the way it should be. Keep the tempering affix recipes as is. When you select the temper recipe you then choose which element you want to affix. Then the only randomization is the strength to the affix rather than the entire pool.
