Can anyone help me? When I’m in the game and I Alt+Tab go to the internet to visit another site like maxroll.gg, even for a few seconds while I check out a build, more times than not, it disconnects me from the game. I’m not sure if it’s on my end or the game. It started doing this a few weeks ago.
My system is pretty stout. Intel i9, 64 GB, GeForce RTX 4080 Super. Could it be something in my settings?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No tech expert but just to clarify for the people who are: you mean disconnects or crashes?
Disconnects happen after like 10ish mins of inactivity.
It just disconnects sometimes within seconds or maybe a few minutes. Almost like I lost internet connection, but couldn’t be since it doesn’t disconnect me from the website.

It happens to alot of people because the game isnt keeping an active connection in the background. What i mean is: If you turn on your ping and alt tab you will notice your ping jumping through the roof dropping packets by the time you alt+tab back in the ping needs to stabilize again. I have tested this ALOT. There is alot of tweaks you can do to your pc out there to mitigate this but it sounds like in your case the packets drop so intensely it just disconnects the game when reaching drop cap. The odd thing is that sometimes it wont do it so much depending on zone and that has to do with the way zones are network routed i believe. All in all, i just say, to mitigate your ping as much as possible. Play from a hard line if you can. Personally i think its a future proofed system and when tech catches up to households, the networking will get better for everyone.

There’s only a few things that come to mind.
- Your router isn’t prioritizing the games connection
- Odd as this sounds most routers have an option to prioritize certain connections, such as if you’re just normally browsing the internet, streaming, gaming, etc. By default it’s usually set to evenly distribute across the board. You may want to check this and make adjustments.
- If this only happens while alt+tabbed, and not while you’re actively playing the game, it’s possible your router can’t handle the traffic coming from your computer and shuts down the connection
- This would typically be very unlikely, unless you have malware on your computer that’s constantly sending data once you open your browser, just throwing it out there though.
- You may be misjudging the length of time.
- It happens, sometimes we just don’t pay attention to how much time we’ve spent alt+tabbed. Also something to keep in mind is what you were doing prior to being disconnected. If you were organizing your stash, the game has been known to consider that going afk because you aren’t moving your character. It’s annoying.
Possible solutions:
Try running D4 in windowed mode see if it helps any.
Make sure to move your character around before alt+tabbing. Teleport somewhere else just in case.
Check your router settings.
Check your own computer for viruses or malware.
Hopefully this helps.
Edit: Also what Retribution is saying. When not the main window, the game is put on low priority by your computer. To check your ping in game, hit Ctrl+R twice and you’ll see it pop up on the bottom left of the screen, just under the chat (if your chat is on the left by default).
Usually mine spikes upwards of 200+ while alt+tabbed. Depending on the numbers you’re seeing, this could also be the issue.

Thank you all for your help.
Iggi when I Ctrl-R i get 60-150 FPS and 150- 200 ish latency
I’ll check the rest of the stuff you suggested. Right now my thinking is towards the router. I’ve had my Spectrum Cable router run some issues before. I think I’ll get them to ping it for me and they notice any issues.

i used to have some weird branded router from my provider for quite some time - i always had issues with that crap. At some point i switched to “Fritzbox” (not sure if you guys have that brand as well and stuff worked awesomesauce.

three monitors are needed for modern gaming with all the 3rd party sites and voice chat programs because the game systems are lacking.
multiple monitors for sure are a blessing. im fine with 2 tho. I could use a third… but i think thatd be too much tech stuff on my desk ^^
Are you 150-200 ping while in game or while tabbed out? If that is in game thats pretty bad for broadband. I used to have spectrum as well until a company finally installed fiber in my area. Im on wifi because its too hard to run hard line from point to point. Someday but not now. Even still my ping is only like 50.
Have you ever reset your modem/router? You should unplug both for like 30 seconds at least once a month to clear the cache.
Honestly even your frames seem pretty low to me. Im driving a 49" super ultrawide and get 220 frames. I do have a 4090 though. I mean unless you are 4k gaming thats probably decent.
I can alt tab out just fine though. I used to have a dual monitor setup and while thats better for seeing two screens this monitor is just so nice for ultrawide gaming. I love it. So what i do now instead of alt tabbing is I have my ipad setup off to the side but in front of monitor. iPad is good for web browsing. If I were you I would just pick up a dirt cheap second monitor so you dont need to alt tab at all. It doesnt have to be an expensive one just for having a web browser open or something.

In game I get 150 FPS with 60-75 in game latency. Unfortunately 600 MB Spectrum is the best I can do in my area.
600 mb is actually good for cable. I think mine was only 200 when I had it. Sorry I can’t help with your issue. I dunno why you crash out when you alt tab. You shouldn’t.

It only happens when you Alt tab? Or it happens if the something else is using the connection? If you can leave your browser open on a yoututbe video and play the game without alt tabbing then it is likely not your connection causing the disconnect. Just skip the router/connection related steps.
You can check to see if your bandwidth is what your ISP promises with this site
If it is lower than you expect, go pull the plug out of your router for 3 minutes, then plug it back in and once the lights have stopped blinking, restart your pc.
Routers/modems can have a buffer overflow over time, so sometimes need to be rebooted.
Alternatively check your network adapter in Device Manager, right click properties, and make sure the power management for the adapter is not under windows managed. Just uncheck the box it is usually the last tab.
You can also use something like this to make sure your connection is not dropping internal to your network, at least to the DNS servers used here.
If your connection is fine:
What mode are you playing in , Windowed/FullScreen/windowed(Fullscreen) ? Try to switch to one of the windowed modes.
Is your monitor in Native resolution? Try changing to that and see if that resolves the issue.
Are you using a controller? or KB mouse? Update the drivers for KB/Mouse. Controller you might need to update Gameinput Service.
Are you on DX12/Dx11? Dx12 uses the windowed(Fullscreen mode) by default, and it should not experience this… but this is Blizzard.
Someone else made a post about this exact issue a week or two ago…see if there was a resolution in that thread.

Just as a follow up, you can go into your router settings, and see if there are any settings. I’m not sure about in other countries, but in the US, most routers are given an IP address of either:
192.168.1.1
or
192.168.0.1
If you type one of those into your browser, usually you’ll get a screen showing you the name of your router with a login prompt. Passwords can vary per router, sometimes they’re written on the underside, or in the manual. You can also google your particular router by getting the model from just looking at the router or the underside of it.
I typically suggest changing this as soon as you get a new router, but to each their own. Regardless once you’re in the settings, you want to go to the advanced section. What you’re looking for is a QoS (quality of service) section.
I have an older router, but this is what mine looks like. As you can see I have Gaming set to the highest priority, with streaming being much lower, and the rest are in the middle. If you change anything, make sure to hit the Save button of course. This may or may not help, but couldn’t hurt.

Sorry Irres, I can’t seem to find this post.
Unfortunately Iggi, Spectrum does not use the IP addresses any longer. You have to use their app, which unfortunately is worthless since it doesn’t give you many choices to make any changes.
I called Spectrum and they did see a bunch of disconnects on my router. They are sending me another modem and router to replace mine. Hopefully that will solve the issue.
Thank you all for all your help. It’s great to belong to a forum with so many nice people that are willing to help.

The way to access your router interface should be on the back of your router.
Verizon also uses MyVerizonRouter or something instead of an IP, but the IP should generally work if you have it correct.
Possible thread was deleted…you know this place. I just remember talking to someone about this if it did not pop up in a search, I would assume it is gone.
No one I know, knows for certain what is causing this.
