Stuttering with 1.3.5 and streaming issues

Even without RT on, I’m noticing a lot of stutter in 1.3.5 all of a sudden. I rebooted to make sure nothing in the background could have been interfering, but still the same thing.

This is a i9-13900KF with 128GB DDR5-5600 and a 4090. The stutters appear to be random with pre-patch settings, but (second issue) when I enable RT, asset loading is worse (which isn’t normally a problem with RT in other games) to the point where running around has a lot of hiccups (more than with RT off).

Yea RT is lowering my FPS to 59 from 144, in a 3090, just sit tight they drop patches break stuff and they go and fix it

RT seems to lower GPU usage significantly for whatever reason. Even with a strong CPU and RAM, it just lowers my GPU usage to like 50% and therefore FPS drops as a result of that low GPU usage. Lots more stuttering with RT enabled as well.

Definitely something isn’t working right. Maybe there’s supposed to be a driver update for the game? Latest Nvidia driver, from March 19th, doesn’t mention anything for D4’s RT update though.

PC Specs:

Intel 13700k
RTX 4090
32GB DDR5 7000mhz
Windows 11
2TB WD Black SN850 PCIe 4.0

That’s to be expected. RT performance vs baked lighting is always going to be incredibly low.

The stutters, on the other hand, are a different issue with asset loading or shader compilation.

Low FPS causes stuttering on your GPU as it does load assets correctly, lower utilization causes issues as well, as rendering is not using your full gpu, rt is lowering gpu utilization for some reason and is causing stutters

I assume the game has to rebuild the shader cache after the patch, like with every new graphics driver you install the same thing happens.
Once everything has been compiled on the fly the stuttering is gone 99% (some engine stutter remains).

This RT implementation seems heavy on the CPU, like other games for example Spider Man, Ratchet & Clank, RT shadows in WoW even.

I never have shader compilation issues in D4. I see it in Unreal stuff, Dead Space, Detroit, and other games; but not D4. This patch added stutter that I have never seen before in this game.

Yeah, last patch added the useless RT but also added lag/stuttering, even without using RT. I didn’t have any lag/stuttering since launch day (only the shader building lag when updating GPU driver, which was just a one or two lags the first time you launch the game after updating driver, but after that was perfectly smooth). The current lag/stuttering is not that, it always lags, mostly when we enter/exit cities/towns, so it seems a loading assets issue, and it always lags in the same zone. This is clearly a regresion and must be fixed asap, because the game can run without lag/stuttering, like it did before this patch.

Blizzard has a tendency to always f… something up after it has been fixed.
Same in WoW, renderscale is broken since Season 3.

I have the same stuttering problem on a 4090 laptop…

Ever since the last patch, I can barely play the game.

The LAG, and the Rubber banding…Absolutely ridiculous! If it gets so bad My “Client” gets DC’ed from the servers and I have to wait around 5-9 minutes before I can even TRY to play again.

Everything was decently fine before the patch…

Will I always suffer playing this game every time they drop a patch or something? If so I might as well wait a little over a week before I can play this game decently again.

Has anybody found a workaround? Well except for turning rt off

Even turning RT off doesn’t fix the stutter/lag. I didn’t even enable RT once, but stutter/lag is there since last patch.

I’m calling a DirectStorage bug (probably accidentally disabled it).

UPDATE

Ok, so 1.3.5a is out, and it claimed performance fixes, so I had to check it out.
Framerate is still low with RT on, but I expected that. I made a benchmark video of a quick vault run with settings maxed including RT at 4k (sort of, DLSS Quality is on. It’s unplayable native with RT. No Framegen because I like my VRR). It felt smooth as I played it, then I rewatched it as I uploaded it, watching the frametime graph the entire time. No huge spikes like before. There are a couple during the teleport, but the framebuffer was likely being cleared for the teleport then, and I couldn’t actually SEE a stutter. Looking good.

Ehhh… i don’t see any new patch here since the RT one. And I still see the stuttering/lag, obviously.

I got an update while doing a screenshot for something else, and it’s in the patch notes on the Battlenet launcher.

1.3.5a Build #51869 (All Platforms) - April 1, 2024

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed an issue where Gauntlet rewards earned by a Softcore character could be claimed by Hardcore characters.
  • Fixed an issue where the Minion Resistance stats weren’t properly localized for all languages.
  • Various performance and stability improvements.

Even with the latest patch stuttering is still present for me…

Okay, the best way to minimize stuttering is to set max fps to 60. Stuttering is still there, but it is almost unnoticeable

60fps is unacceptable. Might as well buy a console.

I concur, but until Blizzard fixes this issue, capping fps is pretty much the only way to enjoy the game without stuttering.
