I think the problem is a bit different.
Yea you can play d4 the way you want. And you should not care what others do. Yet there is a problem from others that will affect you and your gaming.
Blizzard is trying to make a game for everyone. So they need to make content for “Meta” players and for “normal” players.
So what they do is scaling everything. The build “Power” goes from meh to barbilion.
If you play blind without any guide there is a high chance you just end up with a bad build. especialy if you just want to play “your style”
Here is an example.
You have a racing game. 100 cars. they go from 10 mph to 1000. If you only care for yourself you can pick the car you like most and if it goes 10 or 1000 mph should not interst you. If others pick 1000 mph car only what do you care? right?
Except there is a race and you need to win in under 2 minutes. It is easy with a 1000 mph car, nearly impossible with a 100 mph car and all cars below 100 will never win.
Since there are 100 cars and you do not even know which one is fast and which not you pick the car you enjoy most. Then you realise it is a 50mph car. And there is content impossible for you. or you have a 100 mph car and you can do all but it will be exhausting to do stuff others do with ease simply cause they picked a different car.
So now you can either midn your own buisiness and you have to deal with the fact that ever now and then you pick a car that is just a waste. Or you use guidance by others.
The real problem is, ther shouldn’t be cars that are pointless, and the discrepancy between build shouldn’t nearly be as dramatic as it is.
I will say it again and it will never change. By all problems d4 has no matter what the most serious problem is the balancing. Everything is a mess.
As long as some build do 1000 times more dmg as others do, and as long as blizz is trying to make gameplay for “both” these extremes, there will never be decent balancing. No interesting boss fights, no interesting open woirld gameplay, no nothing.
