Look I know this is just another complaint thread…but I played Diablo 2 for over a decade, Diablo 3 for a decade, and I was REALLY looking forward to Diablo 4…and there are two things that already make me want to quit the game, return it, and never look back (and they are also easy fixes!).
To be fair I have not put a lot of time into the game yet, but if these things are frustrating me so much NOW, I can only imagine them getting worse.
Potions: What the hell? Why did Blizzard take literally 20 years worth of steps backward with this system? They already had health globes from D3 that worked fine, and they got rid of them for this terrible potion system which is even worse than the system that existed in Diablo 2. Maybe upgraded potions at the endgame work better…but I doubt they can possibly work better than just simple health globes that get automatically picked up as you fight enemies.
Resources: I see this all over the forums so I guess I’m not alone…I don’t remember EVER having this much trouble casting skills in Diablo1, 2, OR 3. Of course it gets better with gear, but when you are just starting out and basically can’t use any of your skills in fights this just spells trouble down the road. Resource generators need to either generate a LOT more of the primary resource, or skills in general need to cost way less resources by default. OR certain gear items should immediately provide boosts to resource generation starting at like level 5…
I’m sure plenty of people will disagree with me, but as an avid and pretty diehard Diablo fan of over 2 decades, it greatly saddens me that I paid $70 for this game and already want to quit 2 days into it.
This is already in the game? Potions drop from enemies and refill your health if you’re injured. Way better than D3 that had one potion on cooldown or D2 where you had to lug a belt of them around.
I’m pretty sure the whole point of the mana limit thing is that you’re not supposed to be able to run into a room and just spam your core skill 500 times and kill everything. it’s very deliberately numbered out. You get 100 mana, your major skills cost like 40 mana, so you only get 2 spams before you have to wait. So you’re supposed to space your casts out and mix non-mana using spells in between mana using spells. It’s really not that complicated. So many people just want to spam chain lightning but that isn’t at all how this game was designed and by god I hope the devs don’t cave to these complaints because the game is great when you actually know how to play it.
And thats boring and nothing like what diablo or any arpg is about arpg are about feeling powerful running into a room of 20-30 enemies and shredding them not cast 1-2 weak core abilities that deal dog water damage then spam basic abilities for 20 mind to do it again the scaling sucks abilities are underwhelming say what you want about lost ark they got the power fantasy down with those chaos dungeons
@snooks: There is a middle ground. I don’t want to spam my skills ad nauseum, but I do want to be able to use them far more often than I can right now. I literally use two skills in a horde fight, and then have to use my basic attack for a solid 10 seconds before casting another skill. And like Mesenchyme said, the other skills are underwhelming in both damage and coverage, so it feels even worse when I cast them twice, don’t kill anything, and just sit there chopping away. I press the potion button more than I cast any skills…
at end game you can get a lot of resource generation HOWEVER
the road to that place of melting the screen and having tons of resource gen is a long road most casuals will never make it to, and why should they bother if the road there is so long and boring
this game sort of has an identity issue, it doesn’t know what it wants to be.
the devs keep saying they want it to be like d2 slow and methodical, but the actual gameplay at endgame is closer to d3 and poe zoom zoom gameplay
D2 first skills cost 2-3 mana to use, and the minimum mana you had was like 20-30 or something like that. Already, from level 1, you could cast skills more than twice…and yes you had mana potions for when you ran out. Plus you could pick up a leech source almost immediately. Not anywhere near as starved as this game starts you out at.
I think my nostalgia memories are fairly clear…I played Diablo 2 a few days ago lol.
Potion system is really bad. I don’t get why we aren’t just auto-use the potion on the ground if our life is not full and we already have maximum potions (LE did it that way)? Alternative would be it’s auto used if health is <75%, so you don’t “waste” a pot for 10 life.
But no, gotta use one and pick one up, gets a bit tedious but it’s just one of many missing QoL features and not even remotely the biggest problem in this game.
Just kidding. These are good points, and makes sense to not completely defeat the purpose of using strategy to defeat certain bosses, etc…
I would however, like, just a little more mana, please. I don’t need to run the gamut in one go, but at least meet me halfway on some additive regeneration.
I like this better than d3 globes, because you don’t pick up the potions if you are full on pots. They are there to pick up if you need them though, so you can manage better.
Simple fix if they want to keep this play style make our spenders hit like a mac truck that will make up for the gen issue if i casted 1-2 meteors and it killed stuff with high damage that be great but right now im running full meteor legendaries and have the inferno passive that makes pyro skills free i can spam meteor for 8s straight and barely clear anything
Perhaps I should have said automatically used instead of picked up…spamming the potion button mid fight rather than just running over a big red circle and getting healed is a problem for me. D2 was BETTER in that, for longer fights with less potions spawning, you could have 16 at one time instead of the 4 we have now.
It does the job it’s supposed to do, while also being limited to the point where you can’t just spam potions when you get hurt. You’re incentivized to dodge as many mechanics as you can or otherwise limit the damage you take so you’ve got enough potions to finish the fight.
And you will unlock more potions as you explore sanctuary. 5 in total through renown rewards (which the potion increase is account-wide).
I LOVE the potion system. It’s essentially an old school potion system but streamlined so you don’t have to be moving potions to your belt. The way this did this was genius. One of my favorite parts of the game.
Resources are terrible. I’ve leveled both barb and sorc over 50 and it’s so bad on barb. Annoying on sorc but not as game breaking. It shouldn’t take 100 hrs and end game just to get a build going. Can’t keep ww up over a couple seconds. This also ties into lack of density. Both resources and density need to be improved.
sucks to hear about barb, cuz I switched off my sorc because I was frustrated with not casting skills…was working on my whirlwind resource management by dual wielding swords and doing everything I could to get more resource generation already…
Nah, it’s a good system. Having them automatically used would be worse for the player. Leaving them on the ground until you’re ready to use them is a good thing to be able to do.
