Am I the only one that is confused on how that is supposed to work? I mean, you use it and it disappears since all your remaining aether is used.

i assume there could have been a bug where not all your aether got used. Or, i mean, technically you could walk back because you forgot to pick up some aether?

I think it had to do with there being an issue where people would go for the chest BEFORE all the aether was collected, therefore having too little to open a chest, and then the gold chest was already open
In addition: It would cause a massive lag spike with all the gold if you had hundreds of aether to spend

No you are not the only one, this makes no sense at all.
Yep, almost did it one time. I clicked on the gold thing then realized there was still aether on the ground. Was able to move in time to stop it.
So, I tested it and this is correct. If you use the Spoils of Gold, it disappears. But, if you find some aether all the chests respawn. I guess it use to not be usable before and now it is.
