I think it is time to face the harsh reality: the Diablo 4 Sorcerer never actually graduated. In fact, they probably got kicked out of magic school during the first semester.
Remember Diablo 3, where the Wizard was a literal master of the universe, bending fire, ice, and lightning to their absolute will? Yeah, good times. Today, our “grand magus” feels like an intern who misplaced half the spellbook on the way to Sanctuary.
Let’s look at the absolute peak of magic design—our Conjurations:
-
We can summon a Fire Hydra.
-
We can summon a Frost Hydra.
-
And for the final upgrade choice, our genius Sorcerer thought: “You know what’s better than lightning? A second, slightly different Fire Hydra!”
Why on earth do we have two Fire variants instead of a Lightning Hydra? Did someone forget to pay the electric bill in High Heavens?
The restriction is honestly comical at this point. Every single Conjuration—and frankly, every single ability in our kit—should have access to all three elements.
Instead, we are stuck with historical amnesia:
It’s hilarious how Spiritborn gets to mix and match multiple spirit guardians like a buffet, while the literal Master of Elements is stuck staring at a skill tree that looks like a coloring book for toddlers.
Are we ever going to get a real Sorcerer, or are we doomed to play the permanent beta version of a Wizard?
i like the idea that we could choose our elements for each spells, similar to druid how they can choose their form for certain skills.
But im not holding a candle, that we ever get such cool overhauls, like WL gets for s15. We are probabvly stuck with the most basic kit till s25 or d5
If the class was supposed to be based on the D3 Wizard, they’d have named it Wizard. They didn’t, because it’s not. It’s based on the D2 Sorceress class. A majority of our spells are based on D2 Sorceress abilities, and exactly none are based on Wizard abilities unless it was also a spell that Sorceresses had, like Teleport.
The LoH changes bent it more towards a Wizard by allowing us to change spell elements, which was never possible before that. Keep in mind that before LoH there was only a fire hydra; the fact that we now also get a frost variant is an improvement.
Would it be cool if we could make any spell be any element? Maybe… On the surface it sounds attractive, but I kind of feel like it could make our builds more boring… If anything can be a lighting spell then everything will be a lightning spell given the dominance of Unstable Currents. Or that seems like a strong possibility, anyway.
I see what you mean and the history behind how D2 and D3 named their classes is a fair point. But I think looking at it that way misses why people are frustrated right now.
The main problem isn’t the classic feel of the baseline kit—it’s that because of the strict elemental restraints on some spells, they just never get used. By locking those choices into fixed, developer-picked paths instead of giving us true sandbox flexibility, half the skill tree ends up completely dead on arrival for endgame content. Frankly, games like Last Epoch do a much better job of giving you this exact elemental freedom without making the gameplay feel uniform or boring.
And regarding Unstable Currents being too dominant—if opening up universal elements would break the class because of one single Ultimate, that points to a design failure with the Ultimate itself, rather than a problem with player freedom. Giving every spell universal options wouldn’t erase class identity; it would actually unlock a ton of fun variety and finally breathe life back into the unused parts of the classtree.
Simple, hydra is not for attack, its for support. Besides hydra and fire shield any other is for atack. The difference between any other attack spell is the cooldown.
Meteor and Hydra has less cooldown, fire ball.too but meteor does more damage. There is no build set more powerfull than Meteor. A full mage DD!
Mu build uses Teleporte, nova, terror, magnetization, hydras, fire shield for support only. They are counters to activate value for critical and Lucky roulet spin to give a high value like 2.6Billion damage in one meteor ball, or 5x 2.6Billion damage in all meteors in same frame… more than 12billion damage in same frame.
Spent teo months studying all diablo sustem to understand how to build a good build set for DD mage, Now I know!
It’s based on the D1 Socerer except on his failed apprentices.
