Sorcerer damage over time?

I’m wondering about the synergy between sorcerer’s burn damage and the ring that gives me 8 percent dodge vs monsters affected by my damage over time effects.

Is incinerate a damage over time effect? Is standing in my fire ball a damage over time effect? What if I take that 3 second still burning node, is that a damage over time effect? Which burn is a damage over time effect and which isn’t?

Thank you for answering.

Fire Bolt, Fire Bolt Enchant, Inferno, Hydra with passive, and Meteor are DoTs. Anything that will produce a darker zone on the enemy health bar indicating the damage left on a DoT.

I believe Flame Shield, Incinerate, and Fire Wall are just burn damage, but don’t count as Damage over Time.

I use Assimilation Aspect on my burn Sorc. Fire Bolt pierces everything burning and counts for Combustion, so it’s simple to tag everything in a fire wall with DoT.

Actually, The Burn Abilities are a little misleading.

When it says ‘Burns enemies for X Damage per second’ it actually seems to mean: ‘Inflicts 1 second of X Burn Damage over Time each Second it is channeled’.

If you watch the large Enemy Healthbar at the top when using Incinerate or Flame Shield, you will see a very small portion of “Darkbar” which is consistently sustained throughout the Ability Channel.

Conversely, if you watch the Healthbar when the Hydras are attacking your target, you will not see any Darkbar whatsoever.

I have only levelled as far as Hydra, however, based on the fact that Firewall and Inferno bear Burn Keywords, and a ‘Burning Enemies for X Damage over Y Seconds’ description, I imagine they also count as DoT. Should be easy enough to confirm by watching for the Darkbar.

Actually, hydra with the burn option does indeed cause the darker bar. And in fact at later levels due to a bug, that burn is about the only one that does any decent damage.

Ah, I should’ve checked ahead more thoroughly, that’s my bad. I wrote this on my first day as a Sorcerer, and I hadn’t earned an upgrade for the Hydra yet. I guess I would have stumbled onto it when the new season came around, but thanks for the tip anyway!
