but why use such a stupid term?
why not call it “solo mode” or something that doesn’t sound like some convoluted POS that’s trying so hard to sound different

Why is “hardcore” called like it is and not just “permadeath”?

The following is based on some meanwhile research, as I was also curious about where the term originated from:
“Solo Self-Found” is an official term in some other games of the ARPG genre, seemingly introduced after some players came up with it to describe their self-imposed limitations
The term itself is somewhat descriptive, as “solo” refers to the actual gameplay, whereas “self-found” refers to itemization. Therefore, it means that you play a) without grouping (i.e. completely on your own) and b) without trading (i.e. just with items you found yourself)
For comparison, there’s a “self-found” mode in World of Warcraft, just disabling trading, but not grouping. So there are actually variations of the term to describe the limitations one can expect
You could run in circles around Kurast, killing normal and elite monsters and have a full set of decent gear in an hour. I wouldn’t, because that would be dumb. But you could.
Basically, you’re you’re talking out of your rear. Loot rains from the sky in this game and no one needs to leech group content to get it.
You can ssf right now
Trading is a choice
And hardcore feels like ssf for me because I almost never see other ppl its empty so solo maiden solo WB….you get the drift
And yet… there’s entire threads hundreds of replies long about how drop rates need improving. GTFO.
Guaranteed if they had a “true SSF mode” with absolutely zero grouping (no group bosses, no group drops/rewards/kills, no group leeching in Helltides, no trading, etc), with the exact same drop rates as now, you’d be first in line to complain.
I’ve seen your claims and I call utter BS. You claim to play about 1.5 hours/day, but then also claim you’ve received 10-20 Mythics. That’s… ~60 hours this Season (season has been live for 40 days now). I’m also curious how many 2x and 3x GA pieces you’re currently wearing. You’re making this claim everything is fine; provide the evidence. Meanwhile, 5 classes can’t clear mid-level Pits without wearing extensive loot.
Totally agree with OP. I played season 0-5 SSF and it was doable but tedious. Killed Lilith all seasons except season 1 (just didn’t bother after the preseason nerfs).
It’s pretty obvious what Blizzard has to do. Balance D4 for SSF content and it will solve 99% of the problems we see right now. Just giving players the option to buy and sell items and materials created can of worms that is making the game worse every season.
With that said… I did not buy VOH and stopped playing D4 after S5. For pretty obvious reasons when you look at the current state of D4.
I’m telling you from the bottom of my heart that if they changed NOTHING about this game except made it so I could play offline, I’d have no problem.
I brought another toon to 60 just yesterday. Within an hour of playtime I soloed a Helltide Maiden on Torment 2. There was noone else around. Just my fresh toon and a river a of cinders and a little kittycat desperately trying to pick them all up. ^^
You’re wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong when you say I’d be complaining about loot drops. I think drop rates should be halved and player power/scaling should be transferred to skills+paragon. But even if power isn’t transferred, we just got too much damned gear. Slow it down.
“I’ve seen your claims and I call utter BS.” I have gotten 10-20 Mythics since I started playing in Season 0 , not 10-20 per season (but I have seen 5+ some seasons, which is crazy). I’ve only seen 1 this season - the Spiritborn glaive. I’m not using it.
I have maybe two 2GA items and zero 3GA items. It’s been a pretty casual season for me. Lots of questing with the new expansion.
2GA and 3GA gear is like Mythics for me: they’re nice, but not expected to call the season a success.
“You’re making this claim everything is fine; provide the evidence.” I mean the claim is valid based on my definition of “fine”. You disagree because your definition of “fine” is different.
The problem isn’t how much loot drops. It’s the terrible affixes that drop on the loot, diluting the quality. If half as much loot dropped and the affixes were better, we’d be more excited.
But even if they change nothing, loot would be fine on SSF Mode if it existed today.
Make the whole game self found. Quite a lot of people do not want to only play solo.
Blizzard is going against the SSF that many games have, Dark Citadel clearly shows that
The problem is that Diablo 4 Devs are MMO Devs that have ZERO clue about the ARPG genre
A SSF mode makes too much sense for Blizzard to make it, and goes against their MMO background
I’m already playing SSF by being by myself since I started… barely understand most of the endgame stuff yet but I’m somewhat learning, I dont trade because I dont have enough gold (and probably wont). I do the same on D3…
THIS are the biggest issues in D4? Lmao xD
What about Class Balance, Bugs, Too small inventory space because you have to load all bags from other players… what about nightmare dungeons that nobody plays because they are unrewarding… what about missing features like lootfilter, armory, auction house and co?
There is a long list, then there is a gap and then there is your list. ![]()
Half of the things you mention there are none issues when it comes to SSF.
The main reason for the poor state of D4 right now IS EXACTLY because it is trying to do something that it can not deliver. By simply refocusing and making a good solid SSF content - not only will it become better for the players - but also refocus the the game into something it can ACTUALLY handle within very short time.
What you are asking for in your list is simply unreasonable cause we have learned over the past year that Blizzard is NOT able to stop duping and other gamebreaking bugs related to it.
Untill you realize that, without trading in the insanely bloated market, you will never get that +3 Conjuration Mastery/devouring blaze/intel% amulet that you must have in order to progress because your class is too dependent on those multipliers specifically because the devs refuse to balance your class because they want you to buy the next new power.
It solves nothing. The game is in a state that should be better, but it wont be, because when it comes to making a profit, 51% effort and stock market buybacks is a more efficient combo than actually trying.
I don’t think you get the point here. No build should be RELYING on 3 exact max stats on any item to make it viable. If that’s the case… then that IS THE ISSUE. The focus for Blizzard is then to change it and make builds viable without it.
Edit: words.
my post implied just that.
Then prove it, like I asked. But… you won’t. Screenshots are apparently too difficult, I suppose.
And the posts below yours 100% disagree.
Try understanding instead if claiming “the alt I made can solo crap in T2 (lawl) with everything I got on my main” means loot is somehow fine. It’s not.
If your claim is that you’ve acquired 20 Mythics over 5 Seasons with 60 hours playtime each Season all in SSF, again I call BS. Mythics didn’t even get reasonable drop rates until S3, and Sparks weren’t available in S1 and S2. If you’re claiming 3 Mythics this season without a single grouping… well I also call BS.
Here ya go.
I literally have no idea what you want screengrabs of, bro. You want my seasonal mythics all lined up like little purple soldiers on eternal realm or something? I dont understand you. Im not making any outlandish claims.
Also im giving you my opinion and youre telling me im giving you false facts. Youre showing me some other people that feel like perfect drops are required. I dont feel that way. Its okay. You need to relax. Calmate. Everything is okay.
Yes, you literally are.
You’re claiming 20 Mythics over 5 Season (4 really) without grouping whilst also claiming 60-80 hours played per Season.
Shall I quote it? Sure, why not?!?
So either you are lying about your playtime or lying about grouping. Only you know the truth. But you are clealry lying about one of them.
Huh. Looks like I FOUND THE LIE
So which is it? You “exclusively play SSF”, or you group? Hmmm…

Dood are you smoking crack, this already feels like a huge solo self found anyways. I would agree to disagree with “fun” though, especially this season. I understand making codex and ga items a little harder, but when we have to grind the same boring stuff and get the same boring non-ga items and deff. a non -upgrade codexed items. Lets do the same stuff over and overrrr again just to get the same old legendary drops yay. Sorry but the fun isn’t there.
Your reading comprehension sucks. I said i play a couple chars SSF every season.
I play a completely different toon with my wife and some friends. You are trying way too hard.
