skipped the first two seasons… for season 3-5 I’ve started every season trying to “play my way” and then when I start dipping my toes in the end game I realize that I need to closely follow an established build if I want to have any chance of completing the season journey in a reasonable time frame
based on my limited experimentation, what it comes down to is that you can play however you want essentially but at a certain point you don’t have enough dps/survivability to dispatch end game bosses without playing perfectly for a very long time compared to a “real” build

If you play an A tier or even some B tier builds you can usually get through the season journey pretty timely. Which part do you mean, like, the champion/slayer levels/achievements or just getting through tormented bosses solo?

No way, I beat my first tormented boss using only unique items, no masterworks. If this build were on a tier list, it’d probably be a D. You’ve got this—finishing the seasonal journey is totally doable with anything. If you need any help, just let us know!
I never said it wasn’t doable, I said it was not doable in a reasonable time frame. I’ve had this discussion many times here. I say something like I said in the OP then I get expert gamers telling me “skill issue” etc. or whatever the current buzz word is.
Still have yet to see ANY evidence of someone killing a tormented boss last season in under 20 minutes in an off meta build with sub par gear. I suspect this season is the same.
What class/spec? Was it solo? Can you post any evidence other than “trust me bro”? I’m genuinely interested, if you are right you are right. I’m not a Diablo expert by any stretch of the imagination.
You can have my “trust me bro”. I homebrewed a fireball build for myself and incinerate for my girlfriend. We had no mythics. We only ran regular bosses enough to get good enough gear to round out our builds. We killed tormented varshan/zir/grigoire with those builds, in a few minutes or less. Then we tackled beast in ice and died a dozen times before we squeaked out a kill and then only did regular version because we had a lot of materials.
Once we hit our cap on those builds, I grabbed a guide and switched her over to LSFO and me to CL. Now we’re killing any tormented boss in seconds and farming horde t7 and pit101.
That’s not solo though. This game might as well be FarmVille with more than one person
Both builds soloed tormented bosses in a few minutes. We do play solo sometimes because we’re not always home at the same time.
I’m not a Diablo expert, especially not on this season, but based on what I know about last season I find any claims of solo off meta build sub 12/12 masterwork tormented boss kills dubious until I see direct evidence of someone doing it.
The game is easy enough as it is, let’s not make it easier. I do think the game needs more build diversity, but if this is your metric for success then all that can happen is they dumb the game down even further. If they can find a way to make more builds in the A-tier range, then I’m all for it. With that said, they shouldn’t make the game easier to accomplish this, imo.
I haven’t invested a lot of time or energy into this season, but like I said. I did not see one video of someone on a frozen orb sorc or whatever last season with sub 12/12 masterwork killing a tormented boss.
T4 on rouge at level 35 because i got a skyhunter… i skipped S4 because oviously itemization “fix” isnt an excuse for seasonal content… i came back to S5 and wow this game isnt even the same D4 i played in S3 and dont get me wrong i do enjoy the game right now but they completely changed directions with this game and made it wayyyy to easy… like u can go into nm100’s and they feel like mobs from open world… NM100’S Use to be deadly with CC and AOE’s you had to avoid even geared… unless certain builds ov (bulwark druid)
A or B tiers can get to tier 7 eventually but 8 is going to be too much.
We should all be honest with ourselves and realize the reason we have 2 or 3 over performing builds every season while others completely go away… i think it has to do with limitation or coding because if sorc are causing lag off of one builf immagine if every class had 2 builds that do that much room clear that fast… yea its simple math to realize what the problem is haha
Getting to teir 7 hordes was a challenge with a custom build in S5 that i enjoyed greatly… my first toon was ice barrage took me a while too clear T7 horde after a S4 break… i tried everything and the only thing that made me do it was getting a tyr might and shako… which is in all honestly i think a design choice but after i got tyr and made few adjustments i was clearing T8 hordes… rolled BArb fpr pvp with 5 mythics and can farm t8 horde as well. Hordes was the biggest W blizz has had in a while and half the community wanted it nerfed after a day… so yea i kinda get some of blizz logic now cuz you cant win
