After playing PoE and again remembering some other arpgs, d4 skill tree feels so boring. I gotta say, the combat in d4 is quite awesome, pretty smooth, i even can argue is the best one in the market. but the skills are just horrible. so much cooldown on them, we are literally locked for each class for a few skills, it feels so poor management that i dont wanna even play it anymore after a few days. its always the same. I dont care of a new aspect in the game every season, that doesnt change the fact that i have the same skills on the same class that i like to play. We gotta make it much more open to choose. I know that would scare alot of casuals, but also its just intuitive what is good and what is not. PoE for example i never played and i always feared the big massive passive tree. But for the first time now in poe2, i started to actually play myself and read one at a time passive as i leveled up and what i would feel it was good for my character and guess what? it worked. So we need more options tbh
Just a friendly suggestion OP. Break up your post into a couple of paragraphs and it would be easier to read.
Play POE then? Why eat at McDonald’s if you like Wendy’s? I like D4’s trees. Simple and intuitive. But hey, I’m just some retired dude who knows nothing.
D4’s skill tree, and whole character progression, has always felt boring from inception. It is just terribly designed and barebones.
i do actually play bouth. the thing is im trying to make d4 a more attractive game and kinda less boring in a skill perspective
As long as that doesn’t mean making them more POE-like. I hate the design of that game. If that happens here, I’m not sure what I’d do with my time. Just saying.
A lot of what would appear on a skill tree for most ARPGs is actually tied up in legendary aspects, uniques, and legendary paragon nodes.
I think POE 2 skill tree is over the top and D4 tree is boring AF. POE 2 needs to tighten that up. Its way too massive.
Yeah the skill trees are terrible. So lazy and not interesting. Must of had more people working on the cash shop than the skill trees. Both groups should be fired though.
There is a fine line between interesting and convoluted. POE2 is definitely convoluted.
I think the skill trees are not that bad, but there are many things I would improve.
- All cooldown skills should have their cooldown reduced with each skill point. Currently, some do and some do not. Take the Season 6 design for Ultimate skills as example.
- The Y-node branches should enhance the skill enough to make it feel powerful, both visually and mechanically. I agree with the general tenor of bringing in some of the defining aspects here, and perhaps giving more than two choices. See this suggestion.
- I dont understand why some classes have more skills than others (compare Necro to Sorcerer). Also, there are not enough core skills for some classes.
- I would love to see better information on skills, something like this:

On a more positive note, I like that a lot of talent points for the skills and passives come from equipment / other sources. This is well done in Diablo 4.
In D4 there isn’t a real distinction between skill tree / aspects / paragon. They’re just 3 different balancing levers.
How is it convoluted?
Are you going fire? Pick up fire nodes.
Need energy shield? Pick those nodes.
Wanna be a mana stacker? Go with mana nodes that support it.
I feel the only need to make a competent build is common sense and knowing what you want your character to do.
