Season 1 - Renown still felt like a tedious grind - Still think more should carry over or have alternate ways to gain renown

tl;dr - Renown still felt awful to complete and took way too long even when side quests and new dungeons were basically my focus levelling up, did not do any ‘levelling strats’, RIP to those who did, I’m sure the renown grind was much much worse. By the time renown was completed for me, it was not a “Oh yay it’s finally done” feeling, it was a “Finally I’m free of this garbage” feeling as I abandoned all the remaining side quests that were no longer needed.

As posted before by others and myself pre-season and now post season, the renown grind still feels very tedious to finish up. I did unique dungeons and side quests and waypoint gathering from level 1 to 45 as well as alternate world events/strongholds in-between, then completed the WT3 capstone and did nightmare dungeons and side quests and helltide till 50. I had around 1700 renown in one area, and around 1300 renown in all the others. Having to farm out 3100 renown at this late stage to complete the renown rewards in the game was, and I cannot stress this enough, absolutely soul crushingly tedious.

The game turned into “Do I want to have fun and level and get new gear, or do I want to do tedious unrewarding chores”

Taking a break from renown, I proceeded to complete nightmare dungeons, world events, helltide, and whisper events focusing on dungeons that rewarded whispers that had not already been cleared as to double dip for both rewards and renown (Whisper rewards on normal dungeons felt fantastic by the way, every 2 dungeons done this way was a rewarded cache).

Hit level 63 and had kind of hit a peak of player power. No new gear drops were being found by this point and the levelling process in WT3 was considerably slower at this level since all but nightmare dungeons seemed to give a lot less meaningful xp. Unable to do the capstone dungeon for WT4, decided I needed more player power. There were only two ways of doing this. Either I level up a bunch through repeated nightmare dungeons, or do the renown for 20 paragon points. One area was quick to grind out but the other areas were still around 500-600 renown away.

Still had over 2000 renown to go if I combined each area, focused on only side quests at level 63 and dungeons that were uncompleted/whispers. This was by far the worst part of the season for me up till now, gaining practically no experience or gear from the content I was having to do for meaningful progression. I think I gained maybe a level over the 2000 renown grind because I had completed each nightmare dungeon at least once by this point and since they’re so limited in which dungeons can be nightmare dungeons you cannot use this method as a way to play fun content while farming renown. Side quests give practically nothing, and the closer I got to getting renown done the less often whisper available dungeons would pop up, often being dungeons I had already completed.

I still think side quest renown should carry over once completed and that there should be other avenues to earn renown. If a new dungeon rewards 40 renown, why not let a replayed dungeon reward 5 or 10? Why can’t world events be worth a small amount of renown? Why can’t season events and tunnels give renown? They don’t have to be the new fast track to renown completion, I’m not saying they should be worth the same or more, but even if repeated content or seasonal content gave me a small renown reward each time that means I could play fun, meaningful content more often and not get frustrated by the thought of “I want to play Diablo 4, but I don’t want to grind renown, but it’s really what I need to do to progress”

I will most definitely not be grinding renown again. After this season, I will just not buy the battle pass and only play on eternal. I already purchased the most expensive pack, so I essentially paid for a pass. But unless they allow the battle pass to be perused on eternal, I’ll just not buy again. Renown re-grind isn’t fun to me.

Here’s a tip:

  1. Form a party of 4 people
  2. Set game to WT1
  3. Split farm dungeons. All party members get Codex + Renown rewards, even if not in the area.
  4. Renown grind done. I finished mine at lv 40, rofl (takes about 3-4 hours)

Game is boring. Grinding the renown is tedious. If they still forced us to grind the renown again next season. Going to pretty much skip the renown part. Log in and play the game just to check out the new season and be done with it.

D4 is basically the Beluga of the series in attractiveness of gameplay.

So long story short, day 1 of season 1, level 1 characters should have been able to claim all 5 rewards from all regions if there was a true carry over from eternal realm.

The fact we have to go through this renown BS again is…BS.

i dont really think it takes long at all since the most of it gets done pretty much on the go while leveling if you just plan your route a bit.

like, i finished a renown every day and just focused on that area for that day.

But yea, maybe it wont hurt to have other sources for renown too. like legion events or world bosses.

You’re a filthy liar. There is no way you didn’t get all the renown you needed if this is exclusively how you leveled.

It’s extremely easy to just go each dungeon once and that’s basically all the renown you need.

It’s also really easy to see if the quests you pick up are going to be super quick or tedious and only do the quick ones if you just want to pump renown.

Blizzard will most likely make renown account wide. Meaning that any and all renown will carry over to seasons. Because it is well known people don’t want to waste their time grinding that every season.

Don’t see them caving on this. If anything they will give us Waypoint renown…maybe. however they will still want us to grind.

That is fine for seasonal.

Put the battle pass on eternal as well, so that those of us that don’t want to regrind renown can stay on eternal. Give the seasonal players something completely separate from the battle pass rewards for playing on the seasonal realm.

We will have to wait and see. They could as you mentioned change how renown works in seasons by offering exclusive rewards for seasonal players. Outside of battle Pass. To me the Battle Pass is just some extra perks that some players might want, While others may not be interested in.

It is absolutely what I did, my focus was going to new dungeons that had aspect/renown reward as well as picking up every side quest I could find and completing them on the way to unique dungeons, doing world events and strongholds and waypoints as I was close by. I had fractured peaks nearly completed this way for renown by the time I was 45.

I did not look up any optimal routes and was solo playing, and this was the experience I had in season 1. My first eternal character at 77 and my second eternal character a 56 also felt awful doing the renown grind although it was better in season 1 thanks to the lilith altars and map exploration carrying over.

I had hoped the extra renown from Dungeons and Side Quests being increased would be enough to make it feel less tedious but it went from Severely Tedious to Moderate-Severe Tedious so it did not have the impact I was hopeful for. Just need to do something that bumps it to Minor-Moderate tediousness and people will be able to stomach it a lot better without there being posts on the forums about it. Just do a forum search for “renown after:2023-07-20” it’s a glaring issue for many people, just because you can form a group of 4 and go split farm dungeons for 4 hours to power it out doesn’t mean it’s a well designed system, there is definitely room for improvement (its already been improved multiple times now which I’m grateful for and hope they take it further)

Hell no i am not doing renown again for the third time. I can say for sure, if they don’t get off their high horse and listen to our demands about that issue, season 2 will be a ghost town.

Will not ever grind renown again. Or apsects. Unlock them once and they should be account wide.

I really like the idea of having side quests carry over. This would be a twofold bonus. First, and most obviously it would limit the tedium of regrinding renown every season. Season 0 it felt like a mostly interesting mechanic as my power slowly crept up with unlocking altars and the occasional boost from renown levels. That being said, in season 1 it just feels like repeating a boring grind that I “have” to do in order to not gimp my power later. At level 62 I still have two areas to finish so that I don’t have to think about it in WT4. I leveled mostly in new dungeons with Legions and World Bosses and Helltides salted in when they were up. Now At this level the dungeons become worse because the enemies are level capped. I tried capstone at 60 till I got tired of Elias 1 shotting me but I’m gonna give it another go tonight and see what difference 2 levels makes.

The second and I think more important reason to make this change would be that it would incentivize the player-base to do all of the quests at least once. On season 0 I started out leveling doing side quests till I realized it was actually slowing my progression. Some of them were lots of fun with cool story but others were just boring fetch [this] for [some pointless reason]. If we could have an incentive to do all of the side quests one time to streamline our experience in future seasons there would be a good reason to put up with all of the bad quests and experience all of the great ones. Currently, it makes more sense to just run every dungeon once to unlock the aspects even though we may never use most of them. I’m sure I’m not the only person who doesn’t have the time to level multiple season alts to 100.

TL;DR Just let us play through the side quests once to be permanently rewarded while experiencing all of the games content while reducing the tedium of repeating unrewarding tasks.

If renown isnt just removed or 100% carried over for season 2. Blizz isnt getting any money from me. Simple as

Season 2 - * Paragon Points, Skill Points, Potion Charges, and Obol capacity upgrades will now carry over into a new Season once achieved with an Eternal or previous Seasonal Realm character.

Fantastic change coming in season 2.

Once per season please. Doing renown more than once over a 3 month season is way to much of a time sink. So only 1 character a season for me if I play at all. (The fixes and the services that should have been there at release are taking way to long to implement. And these fixes shouldn’t be highlights or selling points for the next season to come.)

Blizzards handling of everything D4 is worse than bud lights handling of the Dylan mulvaney incident. Customers matter!

Is this confirmed? I did complete all the renowns for season 1 but not for eternal, so my question is will my eternal characters inherit all the renowns from season 1? Thanks.

its seasonal. you start from scratch to get to max level. if that is not what you want to do, play eternal. renown was not an issue at all. and to have such an issue where you couldnt do the capstone at lvl 63 sounds like a build problem. dont blame the game
