Resource Generation vs Resource Cost Reduction

I am trying to determine which affix is better to temper, Resource Generation or Resource Cost Reduction.

If my mana regeneration rate is 21 mana per second and my mana generation rate is currently 16.1% am I regenerating 24.381 mana per second?

If my skill costs 37 mana to cast then with a resource cost reduction of 7.8% does my skill cost 34.114 mana to cast?

I recorded a few casts while in the training dungeon and then slowed down the playback speed (Windows Media Player) to .25 (I assume that is 1/4 second). The results of my mana pool were:

First run: 133 (max mana) → 96 – 101 – 107 – 112 – 117 – 122 – 130 – 133.

Second run: 133 → 96 – 103 – 109 – 116 – 122 – 132 – 133.

The above results did not track with my theory of mana cost reduction or mana regeneration. Which leads me to you folks. Please educate me, where did I go wrong, set me straight, and/or opine on which is better from a mana pool management perspective (resource generation or resource cost reduction).

Thanks

On paper RCR is better (has higher impact per point of use) to invest into cause mathematically speaking: 1/(1-x%) > (1+x%)

Say you get 20% RCR, that means you get 25% more casting capacity/power (yes, 20% reduction of spending increases “credit” by 25%). On the other hand if you get 20% Regen rate you get only 20% more casting capacity/power

With the same logic if you manage to get around 33% RCR you effectively gain 50% more resources… And if you get RCR at 50% your mana pool is effectively doubled

But then there’s “frequency of use” to consider, if you have higher regen you can afford that much more often to continue doing your “combos”, if you have RCR you have to “do your best” and move away until back full

In general > if you’re think you’re able to “all-in-one combo-KO” the group of monsters ahead of you then RCR is better, otherwise RG is the way to go

You’re welcome

Cool. Very understandable explanation. Thank you.
