Why is the Renown system still complete garbage? As it stands there is no reason for it to be here. It seemed like they wanted to make Renown a significant part of the gameplay progression, and it just flopped. People hated it because they were pigeonholed into doing specific, boring tasks in order to check off their renown lists.
Why not take what other games do well, like factions and reputation grinds, and apply it here. Infinite experience bar for each zone - you accumulate renown for doing ANYTHING in the area. Cellars, Dungeons, Nightmare Dungeons, Seasonal Content, Helltides, Events, Legions, Bosses, Killing monsters. Then you can receive unique transmog items, material caches, etc. Make it similar to the tree of whispers where you can get legendary material boxes that have a lot of goodies. Make some of the store-quality transmog sets and slap them into the late game renown tiers so people can showcase their time investment. Have daily/weekly objectives for max level characters to gain bonus renown - similar to the whispers - just have the tasks be a bit more specific. Kill X amount of Demons, Kill X amount of spiders, Kill X boss, clear X cellar, etc.
Just let me feel like I’m progressing even after level 100. You don’t need player experience to do that. While yes, they still need an itemization overhaul, there are smaller game systems that can alleviate the pressure of capping out your build or feeling hard-stuck waiting on those few specific pieces. The itemization is so bad to where you don’t even feel the gear progression - you just hit these massive breakpoints where your build goes from sluggish to screen clearing in one or two items.
I think it’s a big mistake to start the game with 9 potions and 8 skill points, it makes your character extremely strong at level 1 but with each level you advance the points don’t make much of a difference, I spend about 4 levels without adding points. Renown could advance organically with the seasons’ missions, look for a hammer in Hawezar, upon completion you gain xp. You could unlock transmogs, chest flaps, etc. What I miss in D4 is that everything looks the same, we should customize the powers and our gameplay more. Because Kehjistan no longer gives 50% gold, Scosglen 100% material…etc.
It’s because they wanted to add open world and some MMO-lite features, but still made the game as an aRPG at its heart.
This has been criticized because it makes the game like having an identity crisis and neither feature works well by itself (at release) nor mesh with each other well enough to create a new gameplay experience.
What you are suggesting is adding some full blown MMO features like dailies. Personally I don’t agree to it but we do need things to do in game to get more cosmetics.
I would love to see some update to the renowned system, it’s a shame to have content in the game and it’s useless.
they could also provide some new use for Lilith’s alters and perhaps for the fortresses too (I never visited those places again)
