Question about resistance from gems

Are they worth it? I noticed when I equip an 8% all resist diamond my resists only went up something like 2%. I’m confused on how this works, so is it even worth having diamonds in your jewelry slots?

No use skulls

Armor > resistances

Regardless if that’s the case, do you have any idea why the percentages don’t seem to be accurate?

Because they aren’t additive. They are some weird multiplicative formula which Blizzard acknowledged during the fireside chat and said they will be redoing it for season 2.

I’m sure someone knows the formula but the main point is you get more overall spell damage reduction from armor vs resistances

Gotcha. Yeah, that doesn’t seem like the most intuitive system to use. Thanks for the info!

No.

Diminishing returns + the -40% resists from WT4 comes after DR which is a bizarre choice.

I don’t know why they don’t work but everything seems to be balanced around physical damage mitigation because armor is the most important defensive stat.

The formula is simple, but the way they apply the adjustment for higher WT is dumb.

If you have +20% from one source (on WT1) then you take 80% damage from that element (assuming your armor matches), and it is displayed as 20% resist on your sheet. If you have a second +20% source, you take 64% damage (80%*80%) and it displays as 36%. That’s fine because taking 64% damage is 20% better than taking 80% damage. It’s just slightly confusing on the display.

If you go up to WT3, though, your 36% is reduced by 20%. So 20% resist becomes 16% and 36% becomes 27.8%. On WT4 it’s reduced by 40%, so 20% resist becomes 12% and 36% becomes 20.6%. So on WT4, instead of taking 20% less damage by adding a +20% to resists, you take 10% less damage from it. And that comparison gets worse and worse the more resist you have. If you have 80% in WT2 and add another 20%, it goes up to 84% (which is a 20% reduction in the damage taken). But in WT4, you would be starting with 48% and increasing it to 48.8% (which is a 1.5% reduction in damage taken).

INT stat based characters are crippled by the current elemental resists scaling issues. Blizzard’s current stance of not even attempting to correct this design failure until Season 2 should be reconsidered.

I suppose they feel correcting this will be risky and require signficant testing and reworks of many things due to the way monster’s defensive scaling will also be affected.

They probably feel that the majority of players will not even progress to the point where it becomes problematic or will otherwise remain unaware. The rest of the playerbase will just play a different class until they fix it.
