PvP area clarifications

  1. We’re back to diablo II rules right? PvP death is still death? (D3 had a duel area where you didn’t die)
  2. The info the game provides when you enter the region is confusing and seems to conflict with the status effects shown to the player. The implication is that you have to activate the bloodmark to engage other players, but the status tooltips as well as the mechanics of the zone seem to contradict this, For instance, the concept of having to spend a minute doing a ritual in a location marked on the map to all players in the area, which doesn’t require you to have the mark. It seems like the idea is for other players to try to stop you from completing the ritual, but how could they do that if you need the mark to PvP?

Any clarity one could shed on this would be nice.

Yes. Joseph Piepiora, Associate Game Director of Diablo IV confirmed it on Twitter.
Riz on Twitter: “Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but in #Diablo4 if you’re playing Hardcore and you die in PVP, is it permadeath or…? @JoeShely @JPiepiora @RodFergusson @PezRadar” / Twitter

As far as the PvP area goes - if you are in one of the designated PvP areas, you can kill and be killed by other players. The “mark” is a different mechanic.

When you “mark” yourself, you appear on the map to other players, much like starting a ritual or a boss mob does. While “marked” you are considered an “elite” mob. Since I have not seen anyone do it, I don’t know if ”marking” yourself gives you any special buffs. It does give you, and only those who are “marked” access to special chests scattered throughout the zone.

The idea when you “mark” yourself is to survive for the time you are “marked” (not sure how long it lasts). If you do, you get a reward.

Thanks for that. It was a fair question, as Diablo 3 had very limited PvP and it did not kill you.

On that note, if I unlock PvP cosmetics are they only for that character or do they unlock for all? Can I get horse barding on a SC character and then use it on my HC?

So the blood mark is largely a thing that says “Come at me bro,” I guess.

This was helpful on another level. Stuff I didn’t know about at all. Thanks for that.

Yeah fair question for sure. And with that extra explanation from Miscai, things are a lot clearer.

As for the cosmetic unlocks, that I’m not certain of. Anyone who knows should definitely chime in though. <3

Pretty much, yes.

As for the cosmetics, I am not sure since my very limited forays into the PvP zones have not earned me enough to get any. If I manage to get any I will let you know :upside_down_face:

I’d semi-randomly farmed a fair bit of the currency (after teleporting out and losing it all a few times becuase I didn’t know how it worked yet lol) without ever seeing another player, so I suspect that on HC, most people just avoid the area entirely other than to get the one lilith altar and waypoint in the area, and if you have a scroll of escape at the ready, you can just farm the events and mobs to get the red dust you need. But if I can do it on SC, I’ll probably do that instead.

After all, the scroll of escape is an HC-only item designed to encourage people to give riskier activities a shot, knowing that there is a way out if you think to use it. So unless people are easily one-shotting each other, you can just Escape out if you see anyone.

You’re welcome

Not sure about the cosmetics, yet, but I am working on it :slightly_smiling_face:

Something to remember - if you leave the PvP area you lose any shards of hatred you have not turned into dust. The town portal defaults to the capital so if you use it, you will lose your shards of hatred.

The good news is, the towns in the PvP areas are IN the PvP areas. It’s safe to choose those waypoints if you need to sell. They contain everything the capitals have except an obols vendor (the curiosities vendor uses red dust, not obols). This includes a wardrobe and stash.

If you suck at PvP, like I do, I recommend not collecting more than 1000 shards before heading to an altar. That number is pretty easy to get (one event will almost net you that many and the events pop frequently) so if you die in the 45 seconds of the ritual, it doesn’t hurt as much, lol

This is hardcore, I see a lot of non hardcore give advice for hardcore pvp.

If you die your dead for good. It hurts a lot, everything.

Ahh, I forgot when I was typing the explanation and advice - you’re of course, dying on hardcore is perma-death so it’s going to hurt. The rest of it, though, should still be true on hardcore, ie the basic rules of the zone.

You better believe when I get this guy to level 100 I’m going to try to snipe some fools coming in the fields of hatred

Is the Red Dust shared across characters like gold is?
