PTR Installation Optimization

Why am I being forced to download the ENTIRE game again to install PTR when I already have the latest game client installed?

For the love of god optimize the installer by making a copy of the existing game client, then download the updated code for the PTR and stop wasting 95GB+ of bandwidth please

I would post this in PTR Feedback but unable to post there…

You clicked the wrong drop down button. The PTR is over. Check your Bnet app settings.

Upon arriving at the D4 page on the Bnet Launcher, right between the ā€œGame Versionā€ text and above the ā€œPlayā€ button, or it may be an ā€œInstallā€ button depending. There’s a drop down menu.

Upon clicking it make sure you have the following selected:
Live > Diablo IV

And Not
In Development > Public Test Realm

Wrong forum. He’s talking about the PTR Feedback forum, which was up for the time the PTR was up last month from Apr 2nd to the 9th. You can still see it on the Forum listings, along with the PTR Bug forum. I think it’s safe to say you missed it, sorry buddy.

This is known as PEBKAC

I’m aware this is wrong forum hence why I posted here  lol

My ā€˜wrong forum’ response was toward derdofe, not yourself, just to clarify. Your post is fine for asking a question to a problem you’re having.

When you post in the wrong forum, usually it will almost always get a blue response in one way or another lol… hence my post thus when they move it or remove it I know they seen it.

I know many people who have decent internet connections with low latency but downloading the entire game client again will take 2-3 days… as low bandwidth != high latency.

Such an easy optimization to fix which should only require the changed files to be downloaded. This not only applies to D4 PTR but also every other game client they use.

I don’t disagree with you, but your initial post makes it sound like you had an issue because you were trying to download the PTR (which has been offline for a month), rather then the issue of the fact you essentially have to download it twice.

Your post made it seem like you were trying to download the PTR to play, or you didn’t realize your Bnet app was selected to attempt to play it and it started to download the whole client again.

Sadly the PTR was the same for D3 as well. I don’t have enough knowledge as to how it all works myself, or why we have to download everything all over again. Maybe they’ll change it one day, who knows.

First off, no one is ā€œforcingā€ you to download the PTR. It is entirely optional. If you don’t want to download it, then don’t download it.

Second, it is the ā€œtestā€ realm. The worst thing you can do is intermingle the test code with the live code, plus it would force everyone to play the PTR. By having it a separate install, it allows the users to install it or not, and allow the devs to update as necessary without the risk of breaking the live game.

if you already have the game installed it doesnt download the entire game. it copies the files of the game and then it downloads a file update to make it the ptr client.
